On Tuesday, BioWare studio presented the first, quite extensive gameplay of the highly anticipated Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Some industry reporters recently attended a private showcase of other game segments and had the chance to discuss specific mechanics with the developers. That's why new, interesting details about the game are still flowing into the net.

Strong RPG

The devs of The Veilguard devote a lot of attention to RPG elements. The skill trees are to be unique for each class (mage, rogue, warrior) and look like a "web of spiders" - in the very center there are the most important, basic character abilities, and further "threads" will lead to specific specializations.

The game's director, Corinne Busche, compared the character's development in the BioWare game to the skill tree in Final Fantasy X. The system in The Veilguard is designed to be as clear as possible for players, which is an improvement compared to Inquisition, where it was often necessary to consult external guides to fully understand specializations before choosing them.

Interestingly, the maximum character level in the fourth installment will be 50, which is almost twice as high as in the previous part. Specialization selection should be available relatively late in the game, similar to Inquisition, around the midpoint. Corinne Busche claims that The Veilguard will be a full-blooded RPG:

So if I were to contrast Mass Effect versus Dragon Age, for instance… I really view Mass Effect as an ARPG. [The Veilguard] is almost the total inverse of that.

Managing companions and base

Members of our party in The Veilguard will unfortunately have very limited abilities, as has been known for some time now. Each character has a total of 5 basic skills, but the decisions we make during the game will likely affect them, changing their statistics, types, and so on.

It's also very intriguing that the base management system will make a comeback. However, it will be less developed than in Inquisition, as the protagonist of the four part, Rook, doesn't lead a large organization. Our headquarter in The Veilguard is to be known as The Lighthouse.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be released this fall on PS5, XSX/S, and PC.
