Repetitive Dungeons in Diablo 4 are Intentional, Blizzard Says
After the Diablo 4 beta experiences, fans of the series expressed their concerns about repetitive dungeons. Blizzard explains its decision.
Selected players who preordered Diablo IV, have been sharing their impressions from the closed beta (which lasted from March 17 to 20) for several days now. They have already had many reservations, and now a new issue has been added - repetitive dungeon design causing boredom. Blizzard reassures fans and explains its decision.
Repetitive dungeons in reverb
When playing the Diablo IV beta using characters, forcing you to start the game from scratch each time, the players noticed a rather unusual problem.
- Dungeons, which in previous installments of Diablo were procedurally generated, in the latest installment are a combination of the same room layouts in random order.
- Fans began sharing their observations on Reddit, which found support among other gamers.
The game's director, Joe Shely, in an interview for NME decided to allay the concerns and doubts of players.
"The feedback on the dungeons is really interesting for us. The game world consists of five zones, and in the beta players could only explore one - Fractured Peaks. We have included more than 100 dungeons in the game, and many of them are not in the starting location. We expect that as you advance your character, you will have adventures in many different dungeons, rather than the same dungeon over and over again," Joe Shely said.
During the interview, Shely also mentioned the wide variety of missions that will await the players in the full version of the game.
"We have different types of mechanics for different dungeons. Some involve killing all the monsters, others involve completing assigned objectives. It's really about experiencing everything that the dungeons in the game world have to offer that players of the beta version, which received barely a fraction of what we planned, didn't see," Shely explained.
In a thread on Reddit regarding Fergusson and Shely's separate interview with Eurogamer, fans expressed dissatisfaction with the information on dungeons and worry that before the release of Diablo 4 nothing will change in this regard. Shely, however, said that "the similarity of the dungeons is intentional," to be able to link them to their location in the game world.
The devil's not so black as he is painted
The closed beta of Diablo IV was played by more than a million players who - despite a large number of bugs and problems with servers - seem to be satisfied - some fans even saidthat the title already seems to be better than Diablo III.
Recall that the open beta will start on March 24 at 5 p.m. CET and will last until March 27. As part of it, we will test two more character classes: necromancer and druid. Details on the beta can be found in the updated summary.
Diablo 4 will debut on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X on June 6, this year. The title is a thoroughbred representative of the isometric hack'n'slash genre. Just like Diablo III, the fourth installment of the series will require a permanent connection to the Internet - the reason is the network services, including the crossplatform feature.
