Crusader Kings 3 Roads to Power Release Is Paradox's Success
Crusader Kings 3: Roads to Power is the third major expansion for Paradox Strategy. Apparently a very successful one.
Crusader Kings 3: Roads to Power expansion is now accessible on Steam. The third expansion to Paradox Interactive's "crusade" strategy game can be purchased on Valve's platform for $29.99.
Just a reminder: the premiere of the DLC is accompanied by a free update to the standard edition of CK 3. Version 1.13.0, the Basileus update, introduces, among other things, a new session start date (1178), government rules, the ability to designate "conquerors," the appearance of historical figures on the map, and the ability to change the name of Byzantium (with a dozen or so options to choose from).
The full list of changes can be found in an announcement posted on Steam and the official Paradox Interactive forums.
Road to Power
It probably won't surprise anyone that Roads to Power attracted large crowds to Crusader Kings 3. After the expansion's release, almost 48,000 Steam users were playing the game at the same time. This result is more than twice as good as almost any "peak" from the last quarter (except for the period from August 24 to 26, but even on August 25, there were "only" 30 thousand people in the game).
Of course, popularity is one thing, but Paradox fans always have concerns about DLC, even the major ones (see Stellaris). Nonetheless, it seems that Roads to Power has been well received by players for now.
Bear in mind that only a day has passed since the release, which is not much time to test the changes and new features in a game from the grand strategy games genre. Hence the relatively modest number of reviews on Steam, although out of 321 opinions, only 19 are negative (which gives the expansion a 93% positive rating).
Complaints about the price are always easy to find, although they appear to be less common than, for example, during the premiere of the second major expansion pack. Most players tend to believe that this time the DLC content justifies Paradox's pricing (well, relatively; at least it gives a lot of room for modders to maneuver).
People complaining about old save files being corrupted after installing an update get little attention. Considering the scale of changes, this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Some players have been somewhat annoyed by the fact that the rulers are also a bit... different (sometimes unrecognizable). In this case, you may want to consider reverting to a previous version of CK 3 (via the "Beta" section in the game's "Properties" on Steam).
Nonetheless, for now it seems that Roads to Power hasn't disappointed players.
