It's been a while since the presentation of the first gameplay from Phantom Liberty, the first major expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. Now, however, we can look deeper.

Digital Foundry, a website known for its technical analysis of video games, has dismantled Phantom Liberty and presented conclusions from the shared gameplay footage, which includes a mission in a new location.

Phantom Liberty under the magnifying glass

In the recently published material (available below) three versions of the game were compared: on PC, PS5 and XSX. First of all, you can see at a glance what the new Night City district - Dogtown, presented as the most dangerous place in the entire metropolis, looks like.

The demo consists of several sequences: we have, among other things, combat, but also moving vehicles through the open world. It turns out that performance varies depending on the platform. Digital Foundry's detailed analysis can be found below.

PC

Let's start with the PC, which was the only version running in 4K with ray tracing at the highest details; thus, performance was sacrificed in favor of visual features. You can see the differences compared to the slightly less detailed graphics of the console version,s, where Phantom Liberty was running in performance mode during the presentation.

PS5

As I mentioned, Sony's console showed gameplay in performance mode, so the goal was to maintain constant 60 frames per second in dynamic 4K. With a slightly lower load, it seems that the PlayStation 5 manages this task not badly, however, when there is a lot going on on the screen, performance can drop to about 45 frames. This was the case both during an action-packed shooting and while driving a car on the street.

Xbox Series X

Microsoft's device also showed gameplay in performance mode. The differences between the performance of XSX and PS5 are not large, but noticeable - on the former console Phantom Liberty dropped below 50 frames per second much less often, and on average maintained around 52-53 fps, even in more demanding moments.

CD Projekt Red still has some time to correct the optimization shortcomings. However, it seems that there is no question of a repeat of what happened more than two and a half years ago, when the release of Cyberpunk 2077 surprised everyone with bugs and abysmal performance.

For the full picture, we'll have to wait until September 26, when Phantom Liberty will debut on PC, PS5 and XSX/S.
