Cities: Skylines II has had problems since its release, which contributed to poor opinions of players. Over time, fan comments â?? especially those posted on the game's discussion forums â?? became increasingly toxic. At least that's what Mariina Hallikainen, one of the creators of this production and CEO of Colossal Order studio, believes.

Toxicity of Cities: Skylines 2 community

In her entry on the Paradox forum, Hallikainen listed the studio's goals for the coming months. The most important of them are: the release of the official tool for modders, as well as further work on the console version of the city builder, which should debut in May (on PS5 and XSX/S).

The developer also raised the issue of toxicity, which is said to affect the creators themselves and other community members like never before. According to Hallikainen, in the long run, this can negatively affect fans and the creation of subsequent mods.

(...) we have seen a growing tendency of toxicity in our community, something we have not experienced to this extent before. Not only directed towards our devs but also our fellow community members â?? resulting in people hesitating to engage with the community. In the long run, this will really hurt not only the mood and the happiness of community members but also discourage creativity and modding, something we would be very sad to see â?? Mariina Hallikainen stated.

The words of the creator are not unfounded. Last month, one of the modders decided to remove his CS2 projects due to toxicity of the community.

Ideas for solutions

The artist addressed the players directly and asked for "constructive suggestions" to solve the problem in communication. At the same time, she proposed several of her ideas on how to conduct the dialogue:

  1. Give feedback and disagree, but do it constructively!
  2. Assume people mean well and remember that tone can be hard to convey in writing.
  3. Help us make the community a nice place for everyone by showing your fellow mayors how to give constructive feedback.
  4. Always be kind.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that so far, Cities: Skylines II has received almost 44,000 reviews on Steam, but only 60% of them are positive.
