CEO of Epic Games: Digital Ownership Should be a Universal Notion
Tim Sweeney, owner of Epic Games, shared his thoughts on digital ownership on Twitter. According to him, they should be universal and accessible to all platforms and stores.
We've known since long that Epic Games Store has a wide variety of market conquest tactics up its sleeve. Thanks to free games and exclusivity policy, Tim Sweeney's platform is systematically gaining popularity. However, a few days ago, the head of Epic Games presented on Twitter a brand new strategy, namely to unify the digital goods market. The first step towards this is to integrate shopping with Humble Bundle and connect the library with GOG.
The cooperation with Humble Bundle and GOG is only the beginning, because Sweeney announces that with time we will see more changes.
However, Sweeney goes one step further, proposing various solutions for how the unification of stores and platforms may look like and proceed.
Sweeney proposes three implementation strategies: federated, clearinghouse and decentralized. He also adds that at the beginning the best solution would be a federated strategy, as it is easiest to implement it gradually.
As you can see, the plans of Epic Games' CEO are very ambitious and maybe even utopian. The post also caused quite a stir in the comments. Its author is accused that despite such declarations, Epic Games Store still appropriates exclusive games, thus limiting the connection of stores (it is worth mentioning here the situation of Rocket League, which will switch to F2P later this summer and disappear from Steam. In the case of the PC, the game will be available for download on EGS).
