CDP Explains Why Cyberpunk 2077 Will Only Get One Expansion
CD Projekt RED explained that technical reasons determined that Cyberpunk 2077 will receive only one expansion.
One of the most important launches of this year should prove to be Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. During the unveiling of the expansion, the devs stressed that it will be the only story DLC for CP2077. This came as quite a surprise, as The Witcher 3 has lived to see two large and popular expansion. Yesterday, during a conference call with investors, CD Projekt RED explained the reasons for this decision.
- A company representative was asked how big Phantom Liberty sales would have to be to make the developers change their minds and decide to develop a second story expansion.
- Michal Nowakowski of CD Projekt replied that the decision is final and Cyberpunk 2077 will receive only this one expansion, and no sales results can change that.
- The developers explain that the decision is dictated by technical matters. CD Projekt has decided to abandon its own engine (RED Engine) in favor of the Unreal Engine 5 technology.
- The entire company is already shifting to UE5 and it has been decided that Phantom Liberty will be the last project (at least for a long time ) powered by RED Engine. CD Projekt has signed a 15-year cooperation agreement with Epic Games, which includes both the development of games on the Unreal Engine and the joint improvement of the technology.
- So it looks like the whole team is looking forward to the switch to UE5 and doesn't want to work with RED Engine anymore.
Recall that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will hit PC, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5, and the expansion will debut on September 26, this year. The DLC is already achieving good pre-order sales.
The expansion will thoroughly improve many gameplay elements. Some of them will be implemented for free for the basic version of the game thanks to patch 2.0, but this will not include the releases for old consoles.
