Brand New Free Game Mode Hit Popular Warhammer: Vermintide 2
Versus mode and playable Skaveni are now available in Warhammer: Vermintide 2. The Fatshark studio's game is also on sale on Steam.
Versus Mode has launched in Warhammer: Vermintide 2. Fatshark Studio has released a new game update (version 5.7.0, but hotfix 5.7.1 is already available), which introduces another type of fun to the cooperative game in the Old World of Warhammer.
Rat invasion in Vermintide 2
So far, Vermintide has remained a strictly co-op game: teams of players faced rat-like Skaven and the forces of Chaos in defense of the city of Helmgart. Versus slightly changes the gameplay premise: the new mode focuses on asymmetric PvPvE fights.
The team continues to embody characters representing humans, dwarves, and elves, with a similar objective to the classic cooperation: repelling invaders and accomplishing designated tasks. However, they are opposed not only by regular AI-controlled enemies but also by special player-controlled opponents. Their forces are currently mainly represented by various Skaven, but during the beta tests, it was possible to encounter the only available special monster: Bile Troll twisted by the chaos god "Papa" Nurgle.
Big sale, crowds of players, and complaints about the currency in Versus
Versus is essentially a variation on Left 4 Dead, but without the "director" AI. The new mode and the 5.7.0 update have sparked the interest of players: the daily peak of people in the game has almost doubled compared to the state of recent weeks (via SteamDB). The major sale also did its job: Vermintide is discounted by 95% on Steam, making the game cost only $1.49.
However, fans have significant reservations about the update. The main problem is the fact that supposedly only the winning team gets the new currency (Helmgart Sellsword Marks) for playing in Versus. It might be frustrating for players, as this mode is the only way to acquire these treasures and exclusive cosmetic items.
Nevertheless, it should be added that some internet users consider these accusations to be not entirely true. The Helmgart Sellsword Mark is also earned by leveling through Versus Mode progression stages and completing challenges. However, a lot of people think that the currency should be a prize for taking part in a match (and finishing it), and the victors should only receive more of it. There are also voices suggesting that the game should reward players for achievements during the game.
Besides, some fans believe that PvP elements in a cooperative game don't make sense and as a result, they didn't enjoy playing Versus. This can be seen as proof of the words of the director of Space Marine 2, who referred to PvPvE as the "Holy Grail of design" and highlighted the challenges in implementing this concept in a way that was "fun" without being irritating to players.
