Update (January 27, 11:37 a.m. PT)

Larian Studios confirmed that its partners - most likely Sony - accidentally released Patch 8 for Baldur's Gate 3 in Europe and Asia as part of their preparations for testing. Developers advise players who have downloaded the new update to go back to Patch 7 by reinstalling the game. This suggestion doesn't seem to be an attempt to "put out the fire" - the devs have informed that the saves made on version 1.8 of BG 3 will not only be incompatible with older versions but may also turn out to be incompatible with Patch 8 when it officially releases. Moreover, Larian Studios underlines that unexpected access to the new update doesn't mean that a player has been selected for the upcoming tests.

Original news (January 27, 09:08 a.m. PT)

Larian Studios has been "hyping up" players for some time now for the last major update with new content for Baldur’s Gate 3. To fine-tune the update—which, among other features, introduces cross-play to the highly acclaimed RPG—the devs plan to initially conduct Patch 8 tests for those who have registered via the official website. Although these haven't launched yet, many players are reporting that they already have access to the update.

Some fans started to inform online that they can already test, for instance, new subclasses, even though Patch 8 hasn't been released yet. Larian Studios confirmed that players of Baldur’s Gate 3 on PS5 have gained access to the content of the upcoming update, but this happened due to a mistake and the developers themselves have nothing to do with it.

Most likely, the fault lies with Sony, which may have accidentally released Patch 8 to players before the start of testing. The creators of Baldur's Gate 3 warn fans that game saves from version 1.8 aren't (yet) compatible with Patch 7, which means that people who have access to the new update, who overwrite their saves, won't be able to continue playing until Patch 8 officially releases.

No, the Patch 8 stress test hasn’t yet begun. Yes, PS5 players do currently have access to Patch 8.

While we work with our partners to understand what’s going on, please note that any new saves made while on Patch 8 will not be compatible with Patch 7.

At the end of this important message about the update mishap, Larian studio asked players how their Monday was going. Without a doubt, the developers aimed to highlight that they are just as surprised by the situation as the community is - or possibly even more.

Nonetheless, the actual tests of Patch 8 may start any moment now - the premature release on PS5 suggests that it is (almost) ready for launch. Let's recall that in addition to the cross-play feature and new subclasses, the update will include a photo mode and bug fixes.
