Baldur's Gate 3 - Paladin Oathbreaker Explained

In Baldur's Gate 3 we have many interesting classes to choose from. In this guide you will learn how to become a Paladin Oathbreaker in BG3.

Baldur's Gate 3 is currently in early access, and this means that the developers are constantly working on the game and gradually adding new content. Not only new quests and items are being introduced over time, but also character classes. Patch 9 introduced the Paladin class, and in this guide you will learn who the Paladin Oathbreaker is and how to become one.

Paladin Oathbreaker in Baldur's Gate 3

In Baldur's Gate 3 you can play as a Paladin, and the game then forces us to choose one of two oaths. Thus, we can choose the Oath of Devotion or the Oath of the Ancients. Oathbreaker is the third, hidden subclass. It can be acquired simply by performing evil deeds, such as betraying friends or murdering innocent people. An example would be if, during the course of the game, you meet a group of goblins on your path and tell them that you let them pass and then attack them.

A paladin who has chosen the Oath of Devotion should act honorably, so the future Oathbreaker should focus on betrayals and dishonorable decisions.. A paladin who chose the Oath of the Ancients should simply do evil stuff if they want to change class to Oathbreaker.

After a certain period of time after performing these heinous deeds, a cutscenes will appear in which the protagonist will hear a mysterious voice, and when revisiting the camp you will encounter a character known as the Oathbreaker Knight, after talking to whom you will be able to change your subclass to Paladin Oathbreaker.

Why play as an Oathbreaker and how to return to the previous class?

Players choose to play as a Paladin Oathbreaker in order to become an evil character and to have access to spells that are not offered by the Oath of Devotion or the Oath of the Ancients. Among them are:

  1. Control Undead
  2. Dreadful Aspect
  3. Hellish Rebuke
  4. Inflict Wounds
  5. Crown of Madness
  6. Darkness

However, Oathbreaker is not a permanent subclass. We can restore the previous subclass if we go to the Oathbreaker Knight in the camp and pay 2,000 gold pieces.
