There are still a few days left until the official release of Avowed, the latest RPG game from Obsidian Entertainment studio. However, people who purchased the Premium Edition started having fun yesterday. So it's worth checking how these players received this title.

  1. The reception of the game is currently "very positive." At the time of writing this news, Avowed has 441 reviews on Steam and 81% of them praise the latest RPG from Obsidian studio.
  2. Player opinions align with the sentiment of industry media. According to OpenCritic, the game has an average rating of 81%.

"A very old style RPG, this is not a bad thing at all"

Players praise the execution, interestingly designed adventures, intriguing companions, and above all, a great magic system, which makes the combat very enjoyable. Furthermore, the title is expected to be technologically refined, which is particularly noteworthy since Obsidian typically struggled with this aspect.

Below we present a few example reviews from Steam.

A very old style RPG, this is not a bad thing at all. Very much enjoying it so far. 8/10.

Really solid game with a beautiful world. Grew up with Pillars of Eternity (my fav game of all time), so to see Eora realized in First Person feels absolutely magical.

I will say though, I really hate the direction Obsidian is going with oversimplifying RPG elements in favor of derivative skill trees that offer little build variety and barely any creative freedom. (…)

Outside of that though, the game is absolutely stunning. The environments are gorgeous, the writing is solid, and the combat is addicting. Not to mention, this feels like Obsidian has finally reignited its legendary world design with how much this game encourages exploration and curiosity. I strongly recommend anyone who liked Skyrim, Cyberpunk, or any other ARPG to try this game out!

This game is what I've been missing in RPGs for at least a decade. The quests are fun, and the companions are intriguing.

Avowed - player activity on Steam

Avowed also achieves quite good activity results. For now, the in the peak on Steam the game was played by 9,270 players simultaneously. Given that these are solely people who opted for the more expensive Premium edition, this is a strong outcome, surpassing the early access performance of another recent high-profile Microsoft title, specifically the latest Indiana Jones adventures (via SteamDB).

Similar to the release of the Great Circle, the standard edition will be available on February 18. It will also be accessible through the Game Pass subscription, both on PC and on Xbox Series S/X consoles. Many players interested in Avowed will likely play this title as part of the subscription.
