Avowed Not for Pacifists. Vermintide Their Model of Combat
The option to pass the game as a pacifist will not be available in Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment confirmed. The developers also mentioned companions and the title, which serves as a model for them in creating the combat system.
Avowed won't allow you to play as a pacifist. Carrie Petel, the game director, confirmed this in a conversation with PC Gamer regarding the potential to complete the new Obsidian Entertainment game without having to kill opponents.
This option was available in The Outer Worlds if we made the right decisions. However, according to PC Gamer, Avowed places significant focus on close-quarters combat, drawing inspiration from "best-in-class" titles such as Vermintide. At the moment, players are expressing doubts about this, but the developers still have plenty of time for improvements and evidently want even the most peace-loving user to have the opportunity to see "ferocious" close combat in action.
This doesn't imply that the protagonist will leave a trail of blood and destruction everywhere. The player can still use dialogue options or assistance from encountered characters to occasionally evade combat. However, sooner or later we will have to use brute force.
In terms of dialogues, the devs also mentioned that companions in Avowed won't leave us due to wrong decisions. There won't be a "companion approval" system in the game, but our decisions will impact the history of these characters. You'll only occasionally be required to take a character on an expedition in the game, whose specialization or knowledge is essential for completing the task (you can take max two companions).
Micromanaging the team won't be necessary, even though the game allows you to give basic commands to companions. However, it wasn't revealed (obviously), how many potential companions we will meet during the game.
Avowed will be released in the fall on PC and Xbox Series X/S. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass from the day of its premiere.
