New Assassin's Creed May Have Us Bending to the Will of Aztec Gods
Assassin's Creed: Infinity may be set in Aztec times. Will Ubisoft let us explore pre-Columbian Mexico?
We still don't know what exactly will Assassin's Creed: Infinity be. The answer to this question will be revealed on September 10, but it is possible that some information related to the future of the series has already leaked online.
Assassins in the time of the Aztecs.
They were shared by Twitter user ACG (@JeremyPenter). In a short post the Netizen stated that the plot of the next installment of Assassin's Creed will be set in the time of the Aztecs.
The Aztecs inhabited the area of present-day Mexico between 1300-1521, so we are talking - to a large extent - about pre-Columbian times, that is, before the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus.
Vision consistent with the (new) concept of the series
It would thus be an interesting direction for a new Assassin game - both because of the plot background of the series (after all, many centuries earlier the area was inhabited by the Mayan civilization, whose calendar ending in 2012 is an important theme in the series), as well as the "exoticness" of the area, and the fact that it has not been exploited too much in video games so far.
Equally important, the Aztecs believed in a great many gods, to whom they often made bloody human sacrifices. This fits in with the concept adopted by Ubisoft in recent installments of Assassin's Creed. In Origins, Odyssey and Valhalia we visited ancient Egypt, ancient Greece and ninth-century England (from the period of the Viking invasions), respectively. Each of these games placed great emphasis on the mythological themes associated with the respective culture. It could be similar with the beliefs of the Aztecs.
Credibility of the informant
Of course, all this remains a conjecture for now and it is worth waiting for an official announcement from Ubisoft, which, although it believes in live-service game, intends preserve the current series formula.
However, it is worth noting that ACG (@JeremyPenter) has become known in the past as a reliable source of information - including revealing many details about Far Cry Primal before the official announcement of the game. His reports proved true at the time, but only time will tell if it will be the same in this case as well.
