Apex Legends Attacked by Hackers to Save Titanfall

Over the weekend, hackers made life very difficult for Apex Legends fans. However, the purpose of the action was unusual, as it was to draw attention to the dire situation of Titanfall.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • This weekend, gaming in Apex Legends was hampered due to a hacker attack;
  • The whole action was intended to draw attention to the dire situation of the first Titanfall;
  • TF1 is now virtually unplayable due to hacking attacks and bots, and yet EA continues to sell the game;
  • Respawn Entertainment has already restored full functionality in Apex Legends.

This past weekend, the servers of Apex Legends became the target of an unusual hacking attack. Its goal was to save the PC version of Titanfall, an earlier game by Respawn Entertainment, set in the same universe.

Many Apex Legends players couldn't have fun over the weekend, as playlists were filled with a fake mode called "Savetitanfall.com", whose description stated "TF1 being attacked so is Apex". Users had a lot of trouble joining queues waiting to play, and those who managed to do so often received a message after the game ended encouraging them to visit the aforementioned website.

A few hours ago, Respawn Entertainment finally managed to restore the functionality of Apex Legends. Developers also assured that during the hacking attack there was no leakage of player data. However, they did not comment on the action itself or the current state of the first Titanfall.

The aforementioned Savetitanfall.com website has been up and running for quite some time - it was opened months before the hacking attack, so it can't be assumed that its owners are responsible for this weekend's problems.

The action was intended to draw community's attention to the dire situation of the first Titanfall. For the last several years the game has been practically unplayable. Due to common hacking attacks, servers usually not working, and lobby being filled with spam bots when they do. From time to time the situation improves (e.g. after the devs promised to solve these problems in April), but only for a short time, to quickly return to the previous condition.

Players are further annoyed by the fact that Titanfall is still being sold. It's a multiplayer-only game, so in practice, Electronic Arts is keeping a completely broken product in distribution. This was the case when the project was offered exclusively on Origin, and after the title was released on Steam last year, the situation has not improved. On Valve's store, only 11% of user reviews from the last 30 days are positive, which is categorized as "overwhelmingly negative reception", and the forum is full of messages from angry players.
