This page of the guide to Kao the Kangaroo contains information about the character's hearts, lives and about what happens the in-game death.
Hearts
You start the game with 3 hearts - you can see their number in the upper left corner of the screen. The number of hearts can be increased by acquiring heart fragments. Read more on pages: Beginner's guide, Shops and Hearts - how to get more?.
You lose hearts by taking damage, e.g. if you bump into an obstacle, someone hits you, or if you fall into the water.
In case of water or obstacles, you'll respawn at the latest checkpoint with one heart less. However, if you just hit hit yourself or bump into some spikes, you can keep going with one heart less than a second before.
Lives
The character's lives are represented by round icons with Kao's head. After losing all hearts, you lose one of your lives. If you die on the map so many times that you run out of lives, you'll have to start the whole game all over again.
It is worth noting, however, that if you die on a given map, after respawning you will have:
- 4 lives, regardless of the amount you bought or collected in the store;
- All collectibles gathered in the previous attempt;
- Unlocked passages that you opened earlier.
