In this chapter, you will learn more about the soldiers' classes in Gears Tactics. Weapons and armor alone don't determine the winner, nor do tactics. You also need the right skills and have units belonging to different classes.

There are 5 classes available in the game. Each class focuses on a different combat method and has different weapons. For example, the Scout class has powerful weapons for close-range combat. This class inflicts heavy damage and has the potential to deal critical hit, but it is useless at a long distance. The Sniper class, on the other hand, has long-range weapons but is poorly suited for close range.

Training the characters in the right way will often determine the success of upcoming missions. The gameplay will become easier if you add more skills for your characters in a thoughtful way. It's worth creating some of the best soldiers for story missions to complement your heroes. As for the side missions, you will have to rely on recruits - try to train all available soldiers. Otherwise, there may be a situation where you only have untrained soldiers making the mission very difficult to complete.

A good solution is to specialize soldiers. Each class has up to 4 development paths. You can try to gain skills from any path, but it's best to focus first on getting only one and pick 1-2 skills from outside the established development route to strengthen your character.

  1. Dealing area damage. Each soldier can be equipped with a grenade, which in itself is a powerful weapon. It can blow up enemy tunnels and eliminate enemies behind covers. In addition, the Heavy class can learn the "Explosive Shot" ability, which gives regular attacks a chance of causing an explosion. Scout can leave mines that work great against melee-oriented enemies.
  2. Several attacks/inflicting heavy damage. There is a lot more freedom here because almost every class has at least one skill that increases damage or the chances of a critical hit. Heavy can keep shooting at an enemy until they run out of ammunition or the opponent is dead, Scout can shoot twice, and Sniper can receive additional action points for eliminating an enemy or dealing a critical hit.
  3. Strengthening team members. Support is the obvious choice here. Each path of their skills tree has supporting abilities. The best solution is to develop the "Empower" skill because it gives your allies action points. Vanguard can automatically help downed allies, which can be very helpful during difficult battles.
  4. Medic - only the Support class can heal other characters. You can enhance the healing capabilities by getting skills from two skill paths. Each emphasizes different aspects of healing. Healing grenades are useful, but it is usually better to attack than to spend valuable action points on healing. Opponents usually inflict more damage than most healing items can restore.

Remember that some skills have levels. When a skill is improved, it becomes "better". It has a smaller "cooldown" (the time between skill uses), has increased statistics or a lesser penalty. Sometimes it gains completely new statistics and uses. It is worth getting a few skills at the first level and then focusing on the best and most useful ones.?
