World of Outlaws competitions - races of high-powered vehicles on oval dirt tracks, mostly popular in the US, have often been adapted into video games. World of Outlaws: Dirt Racing is, at the time of writing, the most advanced game of its kind thus far.
Monster Games, the studio specializing in World of Outlaws races, was taken over by the developers of iRacing, one of the most realistic PC racing simulators, receiving access to their proprietary tech. To avoid competition, World of Outlaws: Dirt Racing was therefore only released on consoles.
Gameplay
Though based on a simulation game, World of Outlaws: Dirt Racing was designed to appeal to more casual players as well. The game features numerous driving assist options and an accessible singleplayer career mode.
The available vehicles all belong to one of four authentic categories: Street Stock, Late Model, Sprint Car and Modified. We'll race on over 40 tracks scattered all across the USA, some being licensed, such as Knoxville Raceway, Port Royal Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway. Real drivers, such as Brad Sweet and David Gravel, appear in the game.
Game modes
The core mode of World of Outlaws: Dirt Racing is career, in which we play as a rookie driver gradually ascending the ranks of World of Outlaws competitions. Each success attracts more sponsors and fans, over time tasking us with managing a growing team and upgrading our equipment.
The game also features other singleplayer modes and online multiplayer for up to 24 people.
Technology
The visuals of World of Outlaws: Dirt Racing aren't particularly impressive, just like iRacing, as their engine was developed back in the 2000s - it makes up for its graphics with advanced vehicle and track physics.
