Wizrogue: Labyrinth of Wizardry PC

Wizrogue: Labyrinth of Wizardry for PC is a representative of the roguelike genre; the game was developed by Taito and published by Forever Entertainment. Wizrogue borrows a lot from Wizardry – a series of classic FPP role-playing games; the latest full-fledged installment belonging to that franchise came out in 2001.

Plot

The game is set in a fantasy world. The inhabitants of the Kingdom of Ardéme used to enjoy an existence of happiness and well being. Safety was ensured by Holy Water – a magic substance enchanted in a sacred cup. The idyllic period ended when the most loyal trustee of the ruler, Grand Sorcerer Ambrosius, got bitten by a vampire and decided to flee the kingdom and take the sacred cup with him. Deprived of the divine power, the kingdom soon fell victim to the Miasma – corruption coming from muddy labyrinths. The Miasma turned the kingdom into wastelands within a short period of time. What is worse, the tentacles of this dark force became to reach a neighbouring kingdom, that is, Camrone. Obviously, its ruler started to search for a way to defeat the mysterious energy. Subjects sent to the labyrinths were dying one after another however, which soon led to the discovery that the Miasma can manipulate the shapes of the labyrinths and soldiers without protection of Holy Water do not have any chances against the dark energy. The prince Baudricourt invited the adventurers from the entire land. Their goals will be to penetrate the muddy labyrinths, to find the sacred cup, and eventually – to remove the threat.

Mechanics

Wizrogue: Labyrinth of Wizardry for PC is played from an isometric view. The gameplay formula present does not stray away from the standards created by the previous roguelike titles. The core of the experience is constituted by exploration of randomly generated mazes, facing more and more dangerous enemies and avoiding the traps waiting for us everywhere. The player meets different characters that can join them – this way; one gathers a team of fearless adventurers. It is worth noticing that the labyrinths are filled with useful items the player can modify to their liking. Experience points gained alongside progression allow the player to develop the characters they lead to battle.

Fighting the adversaries in Wizrogue: Labyrinth of Wizardry is an important part of the game. Combat is turn-based here and fighting takes place on a tactical map. Distributing particular crewmembers adequately and executing an appropriate strategy are both crucial for success. Importantly, death is pernament here, so taking actions one has not thought through can quickly lead to the player losing an important character. In such a situation, there is no choice but to begin the adventure from the start.

Technical aspects

In technical terms, Wizrogue: Labyrinth of Wizardry for PC is rather average. Although the encounters are accompanied by different lighting effects, neither the enemy models nor the environmental objects stand out with anything particular.
