A light-hearted arcade game developed by Neon Deity Games which draws from classic side-scrolling shooters. Regrettably, the main hero – as every fish – has a problem with long-term memory, and remembers only last ten seconds. This results in a strange situation, where we take part in brief shootouts with incoming opponents, only to see the level cut short after a moment. However, we can pick up various upgrades between the bouts, and unlock special items that alter the gameplay. Every now and then, a more demanding mini-boss appears, who has to be dealt with in… 10 seconds. The players can act alone, or take advantage of a cooperation mode for up to 4 players.

An old-school 2D platform game which comes with an unusual plot and an unconventional character development system. Adventures of Pip was funded on Kickstarter, which made it possible for the game to reach owners of different gaming systems. The player is taken to the Pixel Kingdom, where life as such is driven by the never ending flow of bits. The world is endangered by the evil Queen however, who has kidnapped the beautiful princess and conquered the lands with the help of her warriors. The protagonist by the name of Pip is the only one capable of stopping the Queen, since he possesses an incredible ability to absorb pixels from the bodies of the enemies he defeats. In terms of the mechanics, the game is a typical side-scroller resembling titles such as Super Mario Bros, thus the player traverses 2D levels, solves puzzles and fights enemies. Adventures of Pip offers an innovative character development system however. Initially, the protagonist is made of one pixel only, but as the player progresses, Pip gains his 8- and 16-bit forms, consequently acquiring new skills.

A platformer with puzzle game features, developed by Upper One Game studio. The story of Never Alone is based on Inuit beliefs, with players taking control of a young girl from the Inupiaq tribe who sets on a dangerous journey with her white fox to save her people and stop the arrival of the eternal blizzard. During her adventure, she will meet many creatures from Inuit legends, such as Sky People, Rolling Heads or Blizzard Man. Never Alone presents its world from the side perspective, as we traverse vast levels, avoid traps, fight enemies and solve puzzles. The single player campaign lets us switch between the girl and the fox, both of which have unique abilities that are necessary to progress; however, control is split between two players in the cooperation mode. Never Alone features good-looking three-dimensional visuals accompanied by a soundtrack based on traditional Inuit music. Interestingly, the narrator speaks in Inuit language and the dialogue is translated into English through subtitles.

November 19, 2015

A combination of a two-dimensional platformer and a logic game created by the independent studio Brainseed Factory. The player assumes the role of an original protagonist, composed of four letters: "H", "E", "R" and "O", who traverses a dark world filled with threats. Exploring a fantasy land, avoiding countless traps, jumping across platforms and solving puzzles requiring the player to manipulate letters and create new words - these activities constitute the pillar of the game's mechanics. Creating words from letters is the key feature of the game, and this is how the player deactivates various traps and gains access to new locations. For instance, in order to open a gate, the player has to assemble the word "OPEN" from the four words given. Furthermore, the player often encounters various enemies capable of tearing the protagonist into shreds. Combat in this game requires us to create antonyms of words. A dark atmosphere present in the game was not built not only on a the minimalistic color palette applied by the developers, but also thanks to the soundtrack composed by musicians belonging to the Dutch sound producer SonicPicnic.

A re-imagining of a 2D platform puzzle game for Wii and NDS, which is a remake of a classic hit originally published in 1989 for Famicom (NES). The game tells the story of a boy and his bizarre, jelly-like fella called Blobert. He needs to find a way to save his planet Blobolonia from an evil emperor, who imposes an unusual diet on his people - composed entirely of sweets. The two heroes set out on a dangerous journey with the purpose of finding the objects necessary to defeat the emperor while his minions try to stop them. The key to success in this classic platformer is to use Blobert’s special abilities, which can be developed by feeding him with a variety of colorful jellybeans. Compared to the original version from 1989, the re-imagining features completely new visuals and slightly changed mechanics – the range of moves and abilities of the hero is much bigger.

During gameplay you take control of a small gearwheel and your objective is to go through winding corridors and collect gears similar to the one you steer, while avoiding traps and dangers, such as spinning circular saws, boosters, teleports, etc. To make things harder, some of the gearwheels are hidden behind colorful barriers that can be broken only by a wheel of the same color as the barrier. Gameplay features an extremely fast pace and emphasizes quick reaction time.
