An arena survival game with an isometric view, enriched with musou-like slasher elements. Warriors: Abyss was developed by Omega Force and Koei Tecmo studios and serves as a spin-off of the Warriors series. We fight hordes of enemies, controlling a team of characters with the option to switch between them at any moment.
Warriors: Abyss is a production on the border of the arena survival genre (action games with elements of roguelikes and bullet hell shooters) and musou-type slashers (in which players take on the roles of characters fighting dozens of enemies at once). It was developed by Omega Force studio, and its release was handled by Koei Tecmo company.
Gameplay
In Warriors: Abyss we watch the action in an isometric view. We undertake hellish trials, during which we fight hordes of enemies and eliminate powerful bosses waiting at the end of each stage.
The game provides us with over a hundred playable heroes and heroines. Among them, we will find fantastic versions of historical figures like Nobunaga Oda. They were differentiated in terms of combat skills, preferred weapons, and fighting style.
We gain access to subsequent heroes as we progress, and we can take a maximum of six characters for a given journey. The game allows us to switch between them at any moment and juggle their attacks and merge them into impressive (and effective) combinations.
As we progress, we develop our heroes, which over time increases their combat potential. Moreover, battle formations play an important role here, providing us with various bonuses on the battlefield. If we fail, we have to start a new game. Thankfully along the way we unlock permanent enhancements, which stay with us forever.

Koei Tecmo no doubt developed this quickly after seeing how popular Vampire Survivors is, and while it’s not exactly pushing boundaries, the team has done a great job bringing its exceptional Warriors properties to the formula. This is a game I’ll be returning to for quite some time, as stress relief if nothing else.

Warriors: Abyss is far from perfect, but I can't pretend I didn't have a blast unleashing flashy attacks and dodging the enemy onslaught.

Dive into Warriors: Abyss and you'll be met with a huge playable roster, frenetic action and a wealth of replayability value. The sights may not be as pleasant and the story is non-existent, but shifting the Warriors franchises into a rogue-like works surprisingly well.
The main pros of the game
- Diverse Character Roster: The game features over 100 characters from the Warriors franchise, each with unique abilities and playstyles, offering significant variety in gameplay.
- Engaging Combat System: Players enjoy the classic Musou combat mechanics combined with roguelike elements, making for fast-paced, action-packed gameplay.
- Replayability: The game offers a high level of replayability due to its character unlocks, synergies, and varying strategies for different runs.
- Meta-Progression: Players can invest in upgrades and unlocks through a skill tree, enhancing their characters and making each run feel rewarding.
- Good Presentation: Reviews highlight the game's solid voice acting, music, and nostalgic appeal for fans of the franchise. The game runs well on platforms like the Steam Deck.
The main cons of the game
- Repetitive Gameplay: Many users noted a lack of variety in stages, enemies, and boss encounters, leading to a feeling of repetitiveness over time.
- Difficulty Balance: Some players felt that the game relies too heavily on meta-progression, making it frustratingly difficult without proper upgrades or character levels.
- Performance Issues: Reports of slowdowns during intense battles or when many enemies are on-screen, impacting the overall experience.
- Lack of Content: While there are many characters, the actual gameplay content (like levels and bosses) feels limited, with only four major areas and a few bosses.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Variety in Environments and Bosses: Players expressed a desire for more diverse levels and a wider variety of bosses to keep the gameplay fresh.
- Deeper Mechanics: Some users noted that the game could benefit from more complex systems that drastically change gameplay, similar to what is found in other roguelikes like Hades.
- Customization Options: There were requests for more character customization options beyond purchasable DLC costumes, which many consider overpriced.
- Multiplayer Co-op: While not a common feature in Warriors games, some players wished for a co-op mode to enhance the gameplay experience.
Summary
- Overall, "WARRIORS: Abyss" has been well-received for its engaging combat and character variety, but it faces criticism for its repetitive nature and performance issues. Users recommend it to fans of the Musou genre, particularly if they enjoy roguelike mechanics, though many suggest waiting for a sale due to its current price relative to content.
