Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans for PC is a point-and-click adventure game set in the Warcraft universe, based on the genre classics of the 1990s, such as Monkey Island and other productions by LucasArts or Sierra. The game was created by Blizzard Entertainment (setting, sound recording, plot) and Animation Magic (cutscenes, cover, engine, sound implementing). The production was canceled in 1998.
Plot
Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans follows Thrall. The game begins at the moment of death of Thrall's parents, killed in an attack by men. As a young orc, Thrall is taken by Aedelas Blackmoore, who wants to train him and then use him to control the whole orcish race.
The captive Thrall turns out to be a very gifted student, but in his heart of hearts he wishes to escape the dungeons and find the other orcs. As the game progresses, Thrall discovers the details regarding the Frostwolf clan, of which his father, Durotan, was a member. The story focuses on uniting the clan, and Thrall and Doomhammer starting an orcish army, which is to attack the stronghold of men, where the protagonist was kept captive.
Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans bridges the events of the second and third installments of the Warcraft series. It features many character already known to the fans, and explore various Azeroth locations in Lordaeron and Khaz Modan. You also visit such places as the ruined castle of Durnhole, the mountain fortress Grim Batol or Blackrock. It is also worth noting that the story of Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans served as the plot of the 2001 book Lord of the Clans.
Mechanics
Mechanics-wise, Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans is heavily based on other classic point-and-click adventure games of the 1990s. In the game, you search locations, gather items and use them appropriately to drive the plot further. The traditional gameplay is accompanied by animated cutscenes, in which you can hear popular voice actors, such as Clancy Brown as Thrall, Peter Cullen as Ogrim Doomhammer, and Tony Jay as Bill Toper.
Other
Originally, Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans was supposed to be released in the last quarter of 1997, but the release date was moved by the end of the next year. Despite that, shortly before the E3 expo, Blizzard decided to cancel the production. The reason for this was the insufficient technical quality of the game, which, compared to the upcoming The Curse of Monkey Island and Grim Fandango, seemed outdated. The cancellation of Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans wasn't well-received by fans, who quickly launched a petition to the developers. It did not affect Blizzard's decision, however.
