Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar Description
The fourth installment in the Ultima series begins a new episode called The Age of Enlightment. Lord British wants to bring peace and harmony to the world of Britannia, but to do so, he must not only defeat the physical manifestation of evil, but also change the views of the people. That can only by accomplished by an Avatar who impersonates bravery and many other virtues that make him an example to be followed. In the end, when we find the book of Codex of Ultimate Wisdom in the dungeons of Great Stygian Abyss, a new island called Isle of the Avatar emerges. After the evil has been defeated, the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom was forever buried in an altar on the Island of Avatar.
The game is powered by a completely new engine that offers colorful graphics and new possibilities of interacting with NPCs. Still, what distinguishes Ultima IV from other cRPGs, is the enthralling story and complex quests. Instead of classic character development, in Ultima IV, we may acquire 8 main virtues that will make us become the Avatar and an example for others.
The game carefully observes our behavior, paying special attention to evil deeds such as killing fleeing enemies or taking someone else’s possessions. Nevertheless, we’ll still find many traditional elements in the game, such as dark dungeons to investigate, evil monsters and the quests for Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, thanks to which we’ll become the Avatar.
