The Last Case of Benedict Fox

The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a metroidvania action platformer with puzzle elements and combat reminiscent of soulslikes. It was developed by an independent studio Plot Twist and published by Rogue Games. The creators were inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's works and hardboiled fiction.

Plot

The Last Case of Benedict Fox is set in 1920s Boston. The main protagonist is Benedict Fox - a self-proclaimed detective investigating the case of a gruesome murder of a young couple and the abduction of their child. The trail leads him to a huge, crumbling mansion where the victims lived. Fox is not alone, being accompanied by a demon granting him supernatural abilities; thanks to him the protagonist can enter the minds of the dead in search of valuable information and clues. He must be on guard, as the surreal realm of Limbo makes people's regrets and painful memories physically manifest...

Mechanics

The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a side-scroller. In order to find out as much as possible about the events that transpired in the mantion we must explore it, searching information used to solve puzzles and progress the main story. The main source of clues are corpses the minds of which Benedict can enter. This takes him to Limbo, where numerous platforming challenges and enemies await. Combat is dynamic, the player needing to watch out for enemies' weak points and gaps in their defenses. We fight them with a handgun, melee weapons, found items and objects as well as various skills provided by the detective's demonic companion. Our array of abilities expands as we progress, letting us face greater challenges and venture deeper into Limbo and the mansion.

Technical aspects

The Last Case of Benedict Fox makes use of a colorful, cartoonish artstyle loosely inspired by Tim Burton's works.
