The Horus Heresy: Drop Assault is a strategy game based on the Warhammer 40,000 franchise and developed by Complex Games – a studio known for creating such games as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run, CityVille Invasion, and DuckTales: Scrooge’s Loot. The game described herein is a peculiar clone of the widely popular Clash of Clans. The game is based on the free-to-play business model with optional microtransactions and is available on iOS and AND.
Plot
Storywise, The Horus Heresy: Drop Assault focuses on the events from the titular Horus Heresy from the XXXI millennium, long before the main story of Warhammer 40,000. The central point of the plot is the corruption of Horus Lupercal (one of the best space marines) by the forces of Chaos and the beginning of a war between Horus’ supporters and the Empire. This military conflict has lasted for a long time and consumed millions of lives.
Mechanics
The game described herein is a tactical strategy game inspired by other hit games for mobile devices such as Clash of Clans and Star Wars: Commander. A player is tasked with expanding his base, gathering resources, erecting new structures, conducting researches, creating defensive structures, and conquering local territories and headquarters. Training an army and attacking enemy forces is less automated than in similar games – a player can move his units. His options are somewhat restricted, however, it is still more than in other games representing this genre. In The Horus Heresy: Drop Assault for iOS and AND, a player can enjoy the game either on his own or in a company of other players by establishing strategic alliances with them.
The iOS and AND release of The Horus Heresy: Drop Assault allows one to control both factions participating in the conflict – this means forces of the Empire and the supporters of Horus. Both factions deliver unique structures, technologies, and units, all of which makes for a diversified and interesting game.
Technical aspects
In terms of its visuals, the game for iOS and AND is not so ravishing, however, the 2D and dark visual style of the game most certainly serves its purpose – it does not impede the gameplay, allowing a player to plan his consecutive moves. As the game is based on the franchise, all the units, machines, and structures follow the convention established by the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
