The Crack of Doom is the third and last game in a series of text adventures based on the story of J.R.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings. Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee are already in Mordor and undertake the final stage of their journey to throw the Only Ring into the fiery depths of Mount Destiny. This time the authors of the program did not leave the player any choice and from the beginning he is forced to direct the character Sam. The first task of the brave Hobbit will be to save Frodo, who fell into the hands of the Orcs after Szeloba's attack.

As was the case in the two previous editions of the cycle, all messages and descriptions of subsequent locations are conveyed by means of text (decent knowledge of English required). It is true that from time to time graphic illustrations will also appear, but their quality leaves much to be desired. The game is relatively difficult and it's worth recording the current achievements of our hero, the more so because the action takes place in real time and you can often come across enemy creatures by chance.

The Crack of Doom is a good culmination of a series of games based on the story of The Lord of the Rings. Admittedly, it is still unsatisfied that the authors have focused only on the thread of two Hobbits, leaving the equally important fates of other heroes, but you can't get attached to the game itself in any way. The only major drawback is the above mentioned illustrations, which actually do not differ much from what Beam Software presented six years earlier in The Hobbit.
