Nintendo Life: 5 / 10 by Jim Norman
We'd always rather see something aim high and fall short than settle for another dime-a-dozen action/platforming experience, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed certainly sits closer to the former. A Heartful of Games has made some noble swings here and some of them pay off - heck, nobody expected the Persona mission structure in this TMNT game. Unfortunately, all this ambition is overshadowed by performance issues that make even its most approachable elements feel like a chore. It's a fine welcome for younger fans keen to kick some shell after watching Mutant Mayhem, but this joint requires some serious scrubbing if it is to live up to its big-screen counterpart.
NintendoWorldReport: 6 / 10 by Neal Ronaghan
It's all the more frustrating because the writing for the relatively engaging plot is great. Part of me wished this game had some time to be refined because the framework of something totally radical is here. It just doesn't make it out of the sewers.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed is a surprisingly good movie tie-in game. It has more to offer than most modern beat-'em-ups and the few tie-in games that are still made these days. It takes inspiration from the Persona franchise, which hasn’t been done in games of this kind. Thanks to the movie's returning cast and the game's expanded character development, Mutants Unleashed stands out as one of the rare, excellent movie tie-in games. Unfortunately, its camera and combat get in the way of being really great or even perfect. Still, for turtles fans, especiallyt those who loved Mutant Mayhem, this is a game that’ll make them shout "Cowabunga!"
The main pros of the game
- Art Style and Graphics: The game captures the vibrant and bold visual style of the recent movie, which many players found appealing.
- Combat Mechanics: The combat is described as fluid and satisfying, with a variety of moves and combinations that allow each turtle to have a distinct playstyle. Players appreciated the unlockable combos and the overall engaging nature of the fighting system.
- Social Mechanics: The inclusion of Persona-style social elements adds depth to the gameplay, allowing players to manage time and build relationships with characters, which enhances the narrative experience.
- Replayability: The game offers multiple characters to master, side content, and a New Game Plus mode, encouraging players to engage with the game beyond the main story.
- Performance: Many users reported good performance on various platforms, including a stable frame rate.
The main cons of the game
- Combat and Camera Issues: Users noted that the combat can feel clunky, with awkward camera angles that can hinder gameplay, especially during intense fights or platforming sections. Some found the combat to become repetitive over time.
- Lack of Checkpoints: The absence of checkpoints can lead to frustrating experiences, as players must restart levels upon dying, which can detract from the overall enjoyment.
- Limited Multiplayer: The game only supports local co-op for two players, which disappointed some users who were hoping for a more expansive multiplayer experience.
- Bugs and Glitches: Several players reported encountering bugs, such as enemies getting stuck, long loading times, and occasional soft locks, which negatively impacted their experience.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Online Co-op: Many users expressed a desire for online multiplayer options, which were not included in the game, limiting its cooperative play capabilities.
- Depth in Storytelling: Some players felt that the story was lacking depth and that the cutscenes and dialogue could be more engaging, with a desire for more nuanced character interactions.
- More Variety in Enemies and Levels: Users noted that the enemy variety and level design could become repetitive, and there was a call for more diverse gameplay experiences.
- Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions included more frequent saves, better camera control, and improved animations for cutscenes to enhance the overall polish of the game.
Summary
- In summary, while "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed" has garnered praise for its art style, combat mechanics, and social elements, it has also faced criticism for combat clunkiness, camera issues, and a lack of online multiplayer options. Players are looking for enhancements in storytelling, variety, and overall game polish.
