Action adventure game with RPG elements and solutions specific for soulslike games. In Tails of Iron we play the heir to the throne of the rat kingdom, who must face the invasion of sinister frogs.
Tails of Iron is an action adventure game, enriched with RPG elements and solutions taken from soulslike genre. The game was developed by an independent Odd Bug Studio team, and it was published by United Label.
Plot
Tails of Iron takes us on a journey to a fantastic world in which bloody wars for years have been waged between the kingdoms of rats and frogs. The main character is a rodent Redgi, being the heir to the throne of the first of these powers. When his country fell victim to an invasion of sinister amphibians, the protagonist has no choice but to grab a sword and try to reach the leader of the invaders - Greenwart.
Mechanics
Tails of Iron is a side-scroller. Game gives us a vast land at our disposal, which consists of six different biomes. Wandering through it, we complete tasks pushing the plot forward, perform various side missions and complete orders for various factions.
Fighting with enemies plays an important role here. On our way there are, among others, bloodthirsty insects, overgrown maggots or frogs. During the dynamic clashes not only reflexes and dexterity (to quickly dodge and parry the blows) but also perceptiveness comes in handy. Each enemy has a specific pattern of behavior, as well as potential weak points, the discovery of which can tip the scales of victory in our favor. This applies especially to boss battles - frog generals, who can make a lot of trouble. We eliminate enemies using an extensive arsenal of cold and ranged weapons; although the sword may seem to be the most versatile weapon, there is no shortage of challenges in which a heavy axe or, on the contrary, a light spear will work better.
On the way we collect various goodies and blueprints, which we can use in Redgie's fortress. Fortress is not only a base, but also a place where we can talk with the hero's brothers. Dug is a valuable source of information about the missions waiting for us, Rem-Rem can prepare a feast based on the ingredients provided to him (each such meal increases the protagonist's life point pool), while Bam-Bam will gladly forge new weapons and armor for our protagonist, using the blueprints given to him.
Technical aspects
Tails of Iron features eye-pleasing, hand-drawn graphics. The role of the story's narrator is played by Doug Cockle - Geralt from the English version of the Witcher games.

ZTGD: 8 / 10 by Terrence Johnson
I really enjoyed my time with Tails of Iron, it had a very mature story to tell wrapped up in a charming yet dark world. The clever use of communication between the creatures while using ‘Geralt’ for narration duties is definitely one of my highlights from this game. While I am not a fan of the ridiculously named ‘Souls-Borne’ genre, there was so much to love about Tails of Iron that it was easy to overlook. Sure, the combat was very difficult but who doesn’t like a challenge; I just hope we get to see more from Redgi and his brothers in the future.
PlayStation Universe: 8 / 10 by John-Paul Jones
Odd inventory design niggles aside and shopworn concepts aside, Tails of Iron is beautifully presented and a roundly entertaining, surprisingly grim action RPG that boasts a grandly enjoyable combat system. Fans of punishing action RPGs and grimdark fairy-tales will find much to love here.
God is a Geek: 9 / 10 by Chris White
Tails of Iron is a charming and often brutal Souls-like adventure, with some wonderful combat mechanics and a gorgeous hand-drawn world.
