Super Beat Sports for SWITCH is a compilation of 5 arcade games based loosely on the rules of a few sport disciplines. Super Beat Sports was developed by Harmonix Games, which is a team popular mainly for such franchises as Rock Band or the bestselling Guitar Hero.

Plot

Among other games of this type, Super Beat Sports stands out with the presence of a story – the planet Earth gets invaded by an alien civilization from an alternative, musical dimension. The invaders seem to be enjoying earthly sports so much that they decide to modify those disciplines in order to match their own preferences. However, the five new disciplines require testing, so the Aliens decided to challenge the Earth's best contestants.

Mechanics

As mentioned above, Super Beat Sports for SWITCH comprises five types of competitions combining rules of different sport disciplines, and involving the necessity to keep up with the rhythm of music in the background. Alongside progression, the players gain access to new pieces of clothing and equipment, which is used by the participants of the games.

Gobble Golf is the first of the invented sports; it is a variation on the classic golf – hitting the ball at the right time is equally important as hitting it with the right amount of power – all the effort is to feed the ball to a hungry alien. The second contest is Net Ball, that is, a modified game of tennis – playing to the rhythm of music is the key to success, and this particular experience is diversified with the difficulty level rising each time a contestant hits the ball. Rhythm Racket is the next on the list. The player assumes the role of the goalkeeper, and their job is obviously to prevent the opponent from scoring, but it’s a bit more difficult than it seems, since the ball bounces off environmental objects. The fourth contest is Buddy Ball – a group of up to four players and a team of two aliens are pitted together, and the aliens play the ball to a random opponent; the goal of the contestants is to reflect the ball. Each point lost results in losing one heart, so the contestant who manages to stay alive longer than the others wins. Whacky Bat closes the list – the contest is based loosely on baseball, as reflecting balls to the rhythm of music, the player tries to hit aliens located at the other end of the arena.

Game modes

Super Beat Sports for SWITCH was designed in a way that allows the player to enjoy the game alone, but also in the company of up to three other players.

Technical aspects

Super Beat Sports utilizes the unique capabilities of Nintendo Switch. The player can enjoy the game both using Joy-Cons with motion sensors, and using the Pro Controller. Additionally, the game offers eye-pleasing visuals conveyed in a cartoonish graphic style. All of this is well complemented by the soundtrack.
