Arms for SWITCH is an unusual 3D fighting game, developed by an inside studio of Nintendo as one of the starting titles for Nintendo Switch.
Mechanics
Arms is a game centered upon crazy 1 on 1 battles taking place on closed, spacious arenas. Each fighter is armed with boxing gloves that shoot up thanks to integrated springs. These abstract devices can reach our opponent from any range – our job is to press our opponent and dodge his attempts to intercept us.
We can choose from a large roster of fighters – each contender has his unique traits and abilities. Besides, the player also decides on the type of gloves, with a few different models available for choosing. Some models are slow, but powerful, while others are more scrap-oriented, sacrificing damage in favor of speed.
Finally, time to choose an arena. Each location contains numerous objects that can affect the course of the fight, such as traps, obstacles, or springboards.
Game Modes
The game contains an AI module, allowing players to train against computer-controlled opponents, but as could be expected, player on player clashes are the highlight of the game. We can choose from a split-screen mode, connect two consoles using a portable mode, or try your luck in online matches.
Technical Aspects
Arms is playable using classic pads, but the gameplay unveils its potential if the players use Joy-Cons, as the game makes full use of their sensors. Each player has a single Joy-Con in each hand, while the devices recognize movements such as punches, or blocks. By rotating the pad on its axis, our fighter moves around the arena, while the buttons allow us to perform jumps and other moves.
