Screen Rant: 4.5 / 5 by Cody Gravelle
Ultimately, both games remain fantastic additions to any JRPG fan's game library, with Persona 4 Golden by far the more refined and exciting experience. While re-releasing the same games on multiple platforms isn't necessarily the most enthralling action from a long-time Persona follower's perspective, it's nice to see classics continue to become more accessible to potential newcomers. The preservation of this series is important, and if in the process of that the best way to play them emerges - like the case of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden on Switch - then that's just an added bonus.
Windows Central: 3.5 / 5 by Samantha Nelson
Persona 4 Golden isn't a perfect port and it isn't coming to the system most fans were asking for. But if you never had the chance to play a Persona title before, this is definitely worth a shot. The visuals and some of the story might be dated but the characters are so charming that it's easy to lose track of time both in and out of character when hanging out with them. Get to know them all and use your friendship as a strength in the game's sprawling procedurally generated dungeons.
Nintendo Life: 9 / 10 by Mitch Vogel
Over ten years later, Persona 4 Golden remains a thoroughly enjoyable and engrossing RPG that, for the most part, has stood the test of time. Although its visuals might be a bit dated, the gameplay and story presented here do more than enough to justify the purchase, while all the tweaks and additions that came with this 'Golden' edition round out most of the rougher edges from the initial PS2 release. If you're looking to give the Persona series a shot, Persona 5 Royal is a good place to start, but P4G is an excellent entry in the series and one that we would recommend you pick up when you can.
The main pros of the game
- Compelling Story: Players appreciate the rich narrative that delves into themes of identity, self-discovery, and the importance of friendships. The storytelling resonates deeply with many, making it a memorable experience.
- Character Development: The characters are well-developed, with complex personalities and relatable struggles. The "Social Links" system allows players to build meaningful relationships with various characters, enhancing emotional investment in the story.
- Soundtrack: The music is frequently praised, with many players considering it one of the game's highlights.
- Engaging Gameplay: The combination of life simulation and RPG elements keeps players engaged. Many enjoy the day-to-day activities and the balance between socializing and dungeon crawling.
- Unique Atmosphere: The setting in a small rural town is noted for its charm, creating a cozy and immersive environment.
- Replay Value: The game offers multiple endings and a lot of content, encouraging players to replay it to experience different outcomes.
The main cons of the game
- Outdated Mechanics: Some players feel that the gameplay mechanics, especially in combat and dungeon design, are dated compared to later entries in the series (like Persona 5). The lack of features such as Baton Pass makes battles feel less dynamic.
- Repetitive Dungeons: The dungeons are described as monotonous and lacking in variety, which can detract from the overall experience.
- Pacing Issues: Several reviews mention pacing problems, particularly with slow plot progression and tedious side quests that can feel like a grind.
- Character Annoyances: While many characters are beloved, some players find certain characters (like Yosuke and Teddie) to be annoying or poorly written, which can affect enjoyment.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Quality of Life Improvements: Players noted the absence of modern conveniences found in newer games, such as streamlined navigation and combat mechanics.
- More Diverse Dungeon Design: Many wish for more creativity and variety in dungeon layouts, as the randomly generated structures can feel repetitive.
- Handling of Sensitive Themes: Some reviews pointed out that certain themes, particularly regarding sexual humor and character interactions, have not aged well and could be addressed more thoughtfully in future iterations or remakes.
- Improved Accessibility: Players expressed a desire for better guidance on accessing true endings without needing to rely on external resources or prior knowledge.
Summary
- Overall, Persona 4 Golden is celebrated for its storytelling, character depth, and engaging gameplay, despite some criticisms regarding its mechanics and pacing. Players recommend it highly, especially for those who appreciate character-driven narratives and JRPGs.

Persona Series
A series of jRPG games overseen by Atlus. The series was launched in 1996, by the game Revelations: Persona, which is a spin-off of the brand Shin Megami Tensei (originally known globally as Revelations). The production, which debuted on PlayStation consoles, was so successful that it eventually gave rise to a new, separate series. Although from the beginning the series was associated with PlayStation consoles, over the years it has also made its presence felt on other platforms.
