Outlast Video Game Series
Launched in 2013, the survival horror series for which the main source of inspiration was the series Amnesia. Since the beginning, the brand has been overseen by the Red Barrels team, founded in 2012 by former employees of Ubisoft Montreal studio.
A brief history of the Outlast series
The first installment of the series, i.e. Outlast, debuted on personal computers in 2013.. In time, the title also came to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The position, in which we fought for survival in the Murkoff corporation-owned resort controlled by criminals committing macabre crimes, received a very warm reception from players and reviewers, contributing to a kind of "renaissance" of the horror genre. Forging iron while hot, in 2014 the authors released the first expansion to their masterpiece - which is a prequel to Outlast: Whistleblower - and then proceeded to work on its sequel.
Outlast 2, for that was the name of the production, debuted in 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; at the same time, the omnibus edition went on sale, the Outlast Trinity, containing both parts of the series and the add-on Whistleblower. This time the action was set in the Supai region near the Grand Canyon of Colorado, where violent cultists awaiting the apocalypse prowled. Outlast 2 repeated the success of its predecessor, and also hit the Nintendo Switch platform in 2018.
The third game under the banner of Outlast was The Outlast Trials, released in March 2024 for PC and consoles. The authors took us back to the times of the Cold War, to a facility where the Murkoff corporation conducted research on mind control, allowing us to take on the role of the subjects of these terrifying experiments. Like Red Barrels' previous achievements, this production was also a great success, receiving acclaim from gamers and industry media.
Gameplay in games from the Outlast series
In the games under the banner of Outlast the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). By traversing locations, interacting with the environment and fighting for survival, we push forward the stories told in them.
In the first two installments of the series (as well as in the add-on Outlast: Whistleblower), we cannot resist adversaries in any way.. Instead, we have to sneak behind their backs and hide from them, hiding in cabinets, barrels or even in the tall grass. Some changes in this matter were introduced by the game The Outlast Trialswhich allows you to briefly stun enemies or slow them down with certain objects and actions (like closing doors behind you).
In addition, While in the first two parts of the series (and again in the add-on Outlast: Whistleblower) we control a character imposed from above, in The Outlast Trials we create her ourselves, choosing her class and developing her as we progress. In addition, the first two installments of the series allow us to use the camera, which allows, among other things, to see in the dark, while in The Outlast Trials its place has been taken by night vision goggles; both devices require batteries for operation, which are scattered around the locations.
Until the release of The Outlast Trials, all productions under this banner offered only the possibility to play alone. Red Barrels' third major work introduced a cooperative multiplayer mode for up to four people..
Outlast series sales results
A measure of the success of the series Outlast is its sales results. In May 2018, the studio Red Barrels boasted that the series found more than 15 million buyers. In addition, The Outlast Trials managed to attract more than 500,000 players within the first week of its release in Early Access on the Steam platform.

Outlast 2
Action

The sequel to Outlast, a 2013 first-person survival horror and a successful debut of the Red Barrels studio. As the authors decided to abandon the themes initiated in the first part of the series, the game does not return to the dark psychiatric hospital located somewhere in the mountains of Colorado. Instead, Outlast 2 takes place in a completely new location and tells the story of new characters. However, original gameplay mechanic characterized by the inability to fight encountered enemies, remained unchanged. Player's character has no combat skills and survival consists mainly of avoiding direct confrontations. In some cases, an escape turns out to be the only solution. When fleeing, the game's complex model of movements, inspired by the parkour technique, is a great help.
Outlast Trinity
Adventure
April 25, 2017
A complete collection of three games contained in the popular survival horror series Outlast, created by Red Barrels. The collection, entitled Outlast Trinity, includes the first installment, originally released in 2013, together with its official expansion Outlast: Whistleblower as well as its full-fledged sequel Outlast 2 from 2017. The story of the first game (and of the expansion, which, incidentally, is a prequel) is set inside a derelict asylum, which used to be a scene of horrifying medical experiments and dark rituals. In Outlast 2, on the other hand, a search of the protagonist’s wife leads him to a sinister village inhabited by lunatic, aggressive cultists. Both productions offer similar gameplay, putting emphasis on the atmosphere, simple environmental puzzles and stealth mechanics. The common feature off all the games is the night-vision camcorder used for exploration of dark locations.
Outlast
Adventure
September 4, 2013
A survival horror action adventure game. It is the debut project of the independent studio, Red Barrels, established by veterans of the gaming industry: David Chateauneuf, Philippe Morin, and Hugo Dallaire. Outlast’s story is set in an old asylum for mentally ill, adapted, by the Murkoff corporation, into a research center. Journalist Miles Upshur gets his hands on information that strange things occur in that place. Looking for a sensation, he breaks into the asylum, hoping to discover a shocking truth about the experiments and profane rituals. We observe the game world from first-person perspective, and our only weapon is a camera with infrared lens. Gameplay focuses on exploring locations and avoiding direct confrontation with enemies. Due to a terrifying atmosphere and gore aesthetics, game is aimed exclusively at adults.
