Reverie is an action-adventure game developed by Rainbite studio. It has been released as a tribute to classics like Earthbound and first entries in the bestselling The Legend of Zelda franchise.
Plot
Reverie takes players to a fictional island of New Zealand called Toromi Island. The main character is Tai, a boy who is on a long and dangerous journey to solve the problem of malicious ghosts that haunt the inhabitants of the island.
The game’s plot is inspired by Maori myths, mainly the story of a god Maui, who in stories used a mighty fishing-rod to rise from the sea the first land – New Zealand.
Game mechanics
As far as gameplay goes, Reverie follows the path made by the previously mentioned classic titles of the genre. We explore varied locations (with six dungeons and many open-air areas) and fight enemies using weaponry obtained during our adventure, while also solving more or less complicated environmental puzzles.
Aside from countless big and small adversaries (which are fought in real time, requiring both proper equipment and good reactions), we must watch out to not fall for omnipresent traps. There are also feathers of New Zealand’s birds, which act as collectible items.
Technical aspects
Reverie’s two-dimensional graphics resemble those used in 16-bit classics. Developers used a pixel-art style to provide simple, but good-looking visuals.
