TheSixthAxis: 6 / 10 by Gareth Chadwick
With more depth to the combat, Crossing Souls could be a great game. As it stands, though, the lack of difficulty means that the only reason to drive forward is the story, so a recommendation relies heavily on your view of the 80s and reference-heavy stories set during that decade.
Game Informer: 9 / 10 by Javy Gwaltney
Thanks to its robust battle system, intriguing character-switching puzzles, and beautiful storytelling, Crossing Souls is a fantastic adventure that goes beyond its nostalgic trappings
GameSpot: 6 / 10 by Edmond Tran
Crossing Souls is a serviceable action-adventure fueled by 1980s nostalgia, but its dependence on classic tropes isn't enough to make it remarkable.
Crossing Souls Description
Crossing Souls for PC, PS4 and PSV is a retro-styled action-adventure game created by Fourattic and published by Devolver Digital.
Story
The story takes place in California in 1986. A bunch of kids discover a mysterious artifact when playing in the forest. It turns out that it allows to bend the laws of physics, and makes it possible to travel through the border of life and death. The characters are soon thrown into the midst of a government conspiracy led by a ruthless general who wishes to acquire the artifact for his evil purposes.
A significant feature of the story in Crossing Souls for PC, PS4 and PSV comes with an ability to travel in time. When doing so, the player encounters hundreds of characters from different historical periods. The artifact allows the kids to create passages to the afterlife, where thousands of souls await the Final Judgment. Thus, plenty of them are willing to help the characters in their adventures.
Gameplay
The player observes the action in an aerial view. The gameplay primarily consists of exploration, combat, searching for treasures and puzzle solving. There are five controllable characters in total - each has their unique skills and weapons. The right use of those is crucial to complete the challenges.
The campaign in Crossing Souls for PC, PS4 and PSV is enriched with numerous short cutscenes. These have old-school stylistics that resemble cartoons from the 80s.
