Titan Souls
A two-dimensional retro action platform game inspired by typical cRPGs and the cult PS2 title Shadow of the Colossus.
developer: Acid Nerve publisher: Devolver Digital Official website
Titan Souls for PC, PS4 and etc. is an untypical action-adventure game which combines typical features of RPGs like Dark Souls with elements from the legendary PlayStation 2 title – Shadow of the Colossus. The game was developed by an independent studio consisting of three people, called Acid Nerve, with the help of Devolver Digital. It is a commercial version of free application that won the 28th edition of the annual competition Ludum Dare. The aim of the competition is to create best games in 48 (individual developers) or 72 hours (teams).
Plot
The story of the game happens in ruins left by a mysterious, long gone civilization. It is said that the souls of titans that are the source of all life are hidden in these ruins. However, the unique artifacts were shattered into tiny pieces and each piece is guarded by a legendary golem. During the game, the player assumes the role of a young warrior whose task is to defeat the monsters and gather all pieces of the artifact. What’s interesting, the protagonist goes for his mission equipped only with a bow and a single arrow.
Mechanics
In Titan Souls for PC, PS4 and etc. the action is presented using a classical, 2D top-down perspective. The protagonist travels through ancient ruins, solves puzzles and fights the mentioned golems. Each monster is a challenge of a different sort. The creatures have various abilities and battle styles. Each of them has his strong and weak sides and finding them is the key to victory. The fact that the protagonist has a bow with only one arrow makes things more complicated: in order to attack the enemy again, the protagonist must first pick up the previously shot arrow.
Technical aspects
In comparison to the original version of the game which was created in only a few dozens of hours, the final Titan Souls for PC, PS4 and etc. has much better graphics, even though the visuals still use the old school, pixel art style. In addition to creating better controls, the developers focused on expanding the story of the game, thus offering much longer campaign with more puzzles and monsters to defeat. It is also worth noting that Android version of the game requires a mobile game pad and Nvidia Shield in order to work.
