The Wolf Among Us: A Telltale Games Series - Season 1

An episodic adventure game based on the popular Fables comic book series. The Wolf Among Us was developed by Telltale Games, studio that used the same mechanics as in its previous title, The Walking Dead. The protagonists are fairy creatures that were forced to look for a safe haven in the human world where they must hide their true nature. During the game the player can encounter many characters known from the comic books – including the Big Bad Wolf, Snow White or Ichabod Crane. The gameplay is focused mostly on visiting locations, conversing with NPCs, solving riddles and making hard decisions. The Wolf Among Us employs comic book-like visuals and, as usual, cel-shading.

A detective adventure game from the visual novel genre. It was developed by Japan studio Spike Chunsoft. The main protagonist of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Naegi Makoto, is a teenager who starts his education in an elite high school. In contrast to his colleagues, he has no remarkable achievements and he was accepted to the school by winning a lottery. Soon after the school year starts, Makoto and a group of other students are trapped inside the school building and a digitally-controlled mascot informs them that, in order to escape from the trap, one of them must murder someone else in such way that it will be impossible to find out who is guilty. The game is divided into three separate phases. First the player speaks with selected students, builds relations and learns interesting facts. When the murder happens, the player is tasked with gathering evidence and testimonies. Finally the action moves to a court room where during a trial one must find out who the murderer is through a series of minigames.

A sequel to the detective adventure visual novel released in 2010 by Spike Chunsoft. In Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair the player assumes the role of a completely new protagonist named Hajime Hinata. He is accepted to an elite high school despite the fact that he cannot remember what he did to earn that honor. During one of the school trips the class of the protagonist is imprisoned on a tropical island. In order to escape, the students must murder one of their friends and avoid being caught by their colleagues. The gameplay mechanics are based on the same principles as the original game and they are split into three separate phases, in which one must first participate in conversations, then gather testimonies and evidence in the murder case, and finally go to a trial and type the murderer.

An independent retro RPG, which combines elements of a detective game and a horror. The main protagonist of Pixel Noir is trying to solve a mystery of the tragic events from a decade ago when his partner died, leading to him quitting work as a police officer, as he unjustly was sentenced to jail. After being released, he begins to work as a private detective and tries to solve minor cases, until finally, he finds a lead that might help him get the answers that have been taunting him for years. As befits a true RPG, in Pixel Noir, the players get to explore numerous locations, interact with NPCs, find clues, collect valuable items, and fight enemies. Combat is turn-based, nonetheless, it features certain arcade elements. The main protagonist is accompanied by other characters, each one exhibiting unique skills and utilized weapons. Pixel Noir delivers neutral and grim pixel-art visuals.

The third full-fledged installment in the series of mystery thriller adventure visual novels developed by Spike Chunsoft. The plot of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony tells the story of a kidnapped high school student named Kaede Akamatsu. Together with other students, he is taken to a school called Gifted Inmates Academy. The academy’s director is a teddy bear named Monokuma. He informs his “guests” that the only way to escape the place is to kill another student in such way that no one catches you during the investigation. The game employs gameplay mechanics known from previous entries in the series. The gameplay is divided into two main parts: School Life and Class Trial. In the first part the player interacts with other students, creates relations and pushes the story forward. Once a murder occurs, the gameplay mechanics change and the player focuses on conducting an investigation during which he learns testimonies and statements of various people, he looks for evidence etc.

An adventure game/visual novel developed by Kadokawa Games. The action of Root Letter takes place in present-day Japan, with players taking control of a thirty-something man who discovers long forgotten letters that he had exchanged fifteen years ago with a penfriend named Aya Fumino. Her last letter contains a murder confession, and states that she has to atone for her sin. After that, she suddenly broke off all contact. One day, our hero decides to learn the truth about the ominous letter, and find Fumino. When it comes to mechanics, Root Letter is similar to classic visual novels, but the players are left with much more opportunities to interact or influence the course of the gameplay, which is further diversified by investigative minigames. Depending on the decisions made throughout the game, the story is concluded by one of five different endings.
Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness

An adventure game/visual novel developed by 5pb, a Japanese studio known with immense experience with the genre. Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness takes place in the world of Psycho-Pass, a popular science-fiction anime series. We are introduced to a grim version of 2113, in which a complex computer system called Sybil monitors the actions, thoughts, and emotional state of the inhabitants, creating a criminal behavior estimate for every citizen. If the probability is too high, the troublemaker is pursued by the police that neutralizes him on the spot. The game, taking place during the first six episodes of the animated series, enables us to assume the role of two new members of the investigating outfit: Takuma Tsurugi, an executor who’ve been sentenced by the system, but chose to join the police forces, and Nadeshiko Kugatachi, a woman with without memory who works as an Inspector, a person supervising the work of Executors. The game sees us follow the plot, shown through text, pictures, and short animated sequences. From time to time, we are given a choice of a few alternative actions, while our decision affect the possible outcomes of the story.
