Project Borealis is a shooter that represents a fan's vision of what Half-Life 2: Episode Three might have looked like if the script by Marc Laidlaw, titled Epistle Three, published in August 2017, had been brought to life. The development of this project was handled by the independent team of Icebreaker Industries.
Gameplay
In terms of mechanics, Project Borealis is based on the scheme developed for the original Half-Life 2 and two add-ons to this production. During the game we play as Gordon Freeman, and the adventure leads us, among others, through Ravenholm (which this time we visit in winter scenery) and the Arctic, where the title research ship awaits us.
Over the course of successive missions we complete tasks set before us, face enemies and solve environmental puzzles, the lion's share of which is based on physics. In addition to the standard arsenal, which includes firearms and a characteristic crowbar, we have the iconic Gravity Gun, a special tool for manipulating gravity, which allows us to carry even heavier objects in the air and hurl them at enemies.
Storyline
Project Borealis is a direct sequel to Half-Life 2: Episode Two. The story told in the game revolves around the title research ship, on board of which there is a powerful weapon that can decide the fate of Earth. As Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance must decide whether it will be used to defeat the invaders or destroyed, the future of the entire world lies in their hands.
It is worth noting that although the plot of the game in question was written by Marc Laidlaw, the screenwriter of the first two installments of the Half-Life series and two add-ons to the second part of the series, it is not part of the canon. This is because it has been rendered obsolete since its inception by Half-Life: Alyx.
Technical issues
Although Project Borealis runs on Unreal Engine 5 rather than Source 2 technology, it is distributed as a modification for Half-Life 2, which it requires to run.
Project Borealis: Prologue
In November 2024, Project Borealis got a short but playable prologue taking players to Ravenholm and allowing them to test the basic mechanics, check the quality of the visuals, and hear tracks from the new soundtrack.
