Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell is the first expansion for Painkiller, released in 2004. In the game, created by Polish studio People Can Fly, we play as Daniel Garner who, after his death, went on a crusade against Lucifer himself. The expansion starts where the original Painkiller has ended. What is interesting is that the developers also took into account the secret ending from the original game. Garner defeated Lucifer but his place is immediately taken by Alastor. The hero must stop the demon but also get out of hell and finally reach heaven where he can meet his wife.

Plot

The campaign in the expansion has ten, very complex, levels. The time required to complete this game on normal difficulty is about twenty hours. Just like in the original Painkiller, all levels have their unique style. Players can visit places such as a demonic version of Stalingrad, a battlefield known from the Second World War.

Mechanics

The developers kept the mechanic form the first game, which allows players to unlock new parts of a map only after they kill all nearby enemies. It should be also mentioned that the expansion is slightly more difficult than the original game. Enemies are stronger and they have a more advanced AI. This is reflected by how they act, for example, even the weakest enemies can throw away grenades that were thrown at them.

The bestiary is now expanded by the addition of new types of zombies (soldiers, snipers etc.) or men loaded with explosives holding detonators in their hands. Players must also have difficult fights with tanks as well as giant bosses. The developers created two completely new weapons among which we can find a combination of a sub-machine gun (SMG) and a flamethrower.

Game modes

The developers didn't forget about fans of online fights. There are two, completely new modes such as the well-known Capture The Flag. What is interesting is that this mode has two different versions – classic and modified just for this game. Matches can be played on maps from the original game or on completely new ones. The game also has a map editor, which allows us to create our own maps, but in addition to that there is also a tool kit thanks to which players can create their own professional expansions.

Technical aspects

The graphics in Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell are improved slightly but the main thrust of this expansion are big and diverse maps.
