First reports about the game NieR indicated that the new production of Cavia studio, known for such titles as Drakengard and Bullet Witch, will be a multiplatform slasher with RPG elements. The presentation at the E3 fair in 2009 was also a confirmation of this conviction. A little later the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu announced that a game called NieR Gestalt would only be released on Xbox 360, but Cavia did not forget about the owners of PlayStation 3 and just a few days later the world learned that the studio was working on a little different game called NieR Replicant, aimed exclusively at Sony consoles.
As if there was little confusion with NieR, the publisher, Square Enix, decided that NieR Gestalt (under the abbreviated title NieR) will be released on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Western markets. Replicant remained, however, an "exclusive" PS3 title.
NieR Replicant and NieR Gestalt are united primarily by the protagonist and the action site, the dark, virus-prepared and monster-filled world of Black Scrawl. The title Nier is a warrior who, apart from fluency in using white weapons, can also handle magic quite well. However, while the hero of NieR Gestalt is a man experienced by life, in NieR Replicant appears under a much younger and slimmer character. There is also a different degree of relationship with Yonah, for whom Nier seeks medicine, which is the main axis of the plot of the game. In Gestalt this figure is his daughter, while in Replicant the younger sister. The differences in both games are largely due to the publisher's intention. Addressed to PlayStation 3, NieR Replicant was designed for players from Japan and Asia. So it is more "juicy" e.g. in the verbal layer, which in Europe and America could be misunderstood.
The game still aroused a lot of emotions long before its premiere. Much of this is due to one of the independent characters present in NieR (both Replicant and Gestalt). Kaine, who specializes in swords fighting, is a hermaphrodite, and the characteristics of the other sex are due to a demon, who partially mastered her body. The heroine's masculinity manifests itself, for example, in the vulgar language she uses.
The gallery of peculiar companions Niera also includes No. 7. This figure looks like a skeleton dressed in a robe. Using an enchanted stick, No. 7 is deadly dangerous for enemies.
Grimoire Weiss is also a useful helper for the main character. The living magical book saved by Nier gives him access to spells, new physical attacks, and also allows him to improve his weapons. However, the motives of her behaviour are difficult to define as unambiguously good or bad. The book has clearly its own objectives.
As befits a real slasher, NieR Replicant's gameplay is based primarily on deriving sequences of effective and effective blows, supported from time to time by a magic spell. An element taken from the RPG genre is the development of characters during the next stages of the game. Thanks to their skills, Nier and his companions can use new weapons to wreak havoc in the ranks of their enemies.
The graphic design of NieR Replicant stands at a decent level for this kind of production, and the visual convention adopted by the creators of the gloomy world, immersed in suffering and illness may please.
The plot is quite extensive and it does not lack surprising twists and turns of action. As a result, Nier's search for a drug for Yonah is not just a monotonous chopper.
