Mugsters

Mugsters is an adventure/action game developed by a one-man studio, Reinkout. The studio was established by a Finish indie developer, Riku Tamminen. The game was published by Team17. The game was released – among others – on the PC, PS4, and XONE platforms.

Story

Mugsters tells the story of an alien invasion, which turned humanity into slaves. The player is humanity’s last hope, only the player’s character possesses the know how to break free from the invaders and deal with them once and for all.

Mechanics

Mugsters is presented from the isometric perspective. Over the course of the game, the players traverse open levels, which are full of enemies and all sorts of various dangers. Most of the traps are in the form of sentry turrets or killer rays emitted from flying saucers. In order to save a particular number of people (which is the condition under which we can advance to the next level), the hero has to deal with enemies, environmental hazards, and sometimes solve puzzles.

We traverse the vast levels either on foot or behind the wheel of over thirty different vehicles; the list includes cars, planes, air balloons, and even rockets. The advanced physics model employed in the game is used to spice up enemy encounters and solve puzzles. You can e.g. deal with a group of enemies by pushing an explosive barrel on their heads, you can get to difficult to reach places by jumping from special platforms; here it’s necessary to have just the right speed so that we can make the perfect jump. And finally, the game environmental itself is destructible.

Game mode

Mugsters was designed in such a way that every level can be finished both alone and with a friend, thanks to the inbuilt co-op mode.

Technical aspects

The 3D graphics in Mugsters is rather decent, although simple, it’s cartoonish style and vivid, lavish colors make for a pleasant to watch spectacle. The dynamic and catchy soundtrack suits the game well and keeps the players motivated.
