Mortal Rite is an action RPG enriched with mechanics taken from the roguelike and soulslike genres. The game is the debut work of the independent team Round Toast Studios, and was created partially thanks to financial support from players using the Kickstarter platform.
Gameplay
In Mortal Rite we view the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). The game takes us to a fantasy world, which we explore as warriors who differ in fighting style, preferred weapons and skills, and who also have their own stories.
Additionally, each character has their strengths and weaknesses. For example, while the strength of the mighty Shold is... well, his strength, which allows him to knock down enemies and take a barrage of blows and bullets, Dawskin primarily makes use of his speed and agility, jumping to adversaries or escaping to safe distance when things get too hot around him.
The adventure takes us through various locations where our primary job is fighting opponents. Various enemies stand in our way and interestingly, they can target not only us, but also other enemies. There is nothing to prevent us from trying to turn opponents against themselves.
The combat system is reminiscent of the Souls series and its imitators (or successors). When we enter combat we must not only skillfully use light and heavy attacks, but also carefully observe our adversaries, looking for their weak points and gaps in their defenses. We must also demonstrate agility and reflexes to effectively dodge and launch swift counterattacks, as well as change the character's stance (each of them has two) depending on the situation they find themselves in.
The game world is procedurally generated, and the layout and appearance of locations change after each of our deaths. We can be protected from the latter by skill points collected along the way and items found or crafted by us. We can spend skill points on purchasing new abilities or improving the ones we already have, but we can also use the latter in combat or share them with other players. In between expeditions, we end up in a shelter where we can rest and gather strength.
Co-op
Mortal Rite allows to play alone or in co-op mode for up to five people. It is worth remembering that the strength and numbers of opponents change depending on the number of participants in the game. Additionally, there is nothing to prevent us from challenging our allies to duels, thereby unlocking additional rewards.
