A third-person action game featuring roguelike elements. After the Shadowgrounds series, it is the second major game developed by Harebrained Schemes, an independent American studio. Necropolis is set in a vast, magical, procedurally generated dungeon complex that constantly changes its shape.
Necropolis for PC, PS4 and XONE is a combination of a third person action game with elements of roguelike subgenre. It is the second major game developed by an independent American studio - Harebrained Schemes. They started in 2011, and debuted in 2013 with the release of Shadowrun Returns, a classic cRPG.
Story
The action takes place in a fantasy world, with elements of science-fiction. The game is set in a cavernous magical complex which is constantly changing its shape. The player controls a daring protagonist, whose task is to learn about, and get out of that place, defeating the beings inhabiting the complex, of which the most important is the mad archmagus, Abraxis, and the "intelligence" he had created, and which is feeding of the unfortunate souls lured into its domain. The gameplay is accompanied by a large amount of humor. In creation of the game world - and especially its inhabitants - the creators were inspired by a film The Cabin in the Woods.
Gameplay
When it comes to the gameplay, Necropolis for PC, PS4 and XONE is a classic action game that merges together elements such as a demanding combat system, placing great emphasis on timing, and the necessity to learn about the enemies to find their weak spots. When fighting, the player uses combinations of heavy and light attacks. The player can improve their chances by the use of different magical potions that can be brewed from the gathered ingredients. Apart from that, the player can find a certain well-hidden mystical books, which supply him with spells and runes.
The game world is procedural-generated. The effects of that can be noticed not only when starting the game, but, interestingly enough, also during the game: the player will occasionally stumble upon an opportunity to transform the location into a different shape. Moreover, an entire ecosystem was implemented into the game, where different creatures fight one another. The player can take advantage of this by luring rival creatures against each other.
Technology
Necropolis for PC, PS4 and XONE has a three-dimensional, unusual graphics. The developers have chosen darker stylistics, and models made of a relatively small number of polygons, in combination with a world full of odd shapes and grotesque structures.

Wccftech: 5.4 / 10 by Francesco De Meo
Necropolis is an interesting dungeon crawler that sadly fails to live up to its full potential due to a severe lack of content and sense of progression. The game isn't exactly bad, as there are some interesting ideas, but it features so little incentive to play again that most will end up abandoning it after a few runs. Co-op is just not enough to salvage the whole experience. With such glaring issues, Necropolis is definitely not worth its full price tag for the moment being.
Hardcore Gamer: 4.5 / 5 by Kyle LeClair
While roguelike and roguelike-inspired games such as these feel like a dime a dozen in recent times, Necropolis stands out simply by being the best that it can be, with a striking visual style, great sense of humor and an enjoyable co-op mode working together with immense, randomized, yet terrifically-designed levels and some great combat.
IGN: 6.5 / 10 by Brandin Tyrrel
Necropolis pulls many ideas together to ultimately deliver a satisfactory, short dungeon-diving experience that’s best enjoyed with friends. Some of its ideas conflict with each other (such as permadeath and teammate revival), its procedural generation doesn’t offer much in the way of replayability, and its intentional vagueness can be frustrating, but it’s good for at least a few monster-smashing runs before it gets old thanks to enjoyable combat mechanics, cheeky humor, and the promise of mystery.
