Monkey Island Video Game Series

The highly popular adventure game series. Father of the series is Ron Gilbert, and over the years such development studios as LucasArts, Telltale Games, and Terrible Toybox have worked on it.

The first game in the series - The Secret of Monkey Island - was released in 1990 on personal computers. The title was based on the LucasArts-developed SCUMM engine (previously used in such games as Maniac Mansion and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure) proved to be a big hit. Following the blow, the developers prepared a sequel - Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge - released in 1991. Fans had to wait six years for the next installment of the series. Finally, in 1997, the game hit store shelves. The Curse of Monkey Island, which, despite the lack of Ron Gilbert's involvement in the project, repeated the success of its predecessors. Slightly less enthusiastically players received the next part - Escape from Monkey Island from 2000. It was also the last part of the series created by the LucasArts studio, as in the following years Telltale Games took over the development baton. This resulted in the 2009 release of the game Tales of Monkey Island (2009), as well as the remasters of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (2009) and Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge (2010). Players had to wait more than 12 years for the next part of the series. In September 2022, the game hit store shelves. Return to Monkey Island, which is the fruit of cooperation between three companies - Devolver Digital, Lucasfilm Games, and Terrible Toybox. But most importantly, the project was overseen by Ron Gilbert himself, who returned to work on the series after more than thirty years. Interestingly, the item was a direct continuation of the first two installments of the series, ignoring the adventures that were created without Gilbert's involvement.
