Ron Gilbert Wasn't Kidding; Return to Monkey Island Announced
Return to Monkey Island has been officially announced. The next installment of the iconic series will debut this year. What is important, the father of the series, Ron Gilbert, takes part in the development.
Ron Gilbert was not joking - he is actually working on a new installment of Monkey Island. Today Return to Monkey Island, the next part of the iconic adventure game series, has been officially announced. The title will debut this year on unspecified platforms (although PC is certain). A trailer was also published on this occasion, available below.
The game is to be the fruit of cooperation between three companies - Devolver Digital, Lucasfilm Games and Terrible Toybox, the studio owned by Ron Gilbert, which previously developed the excellent Thimbleweed Park.
Fun Fact
More than eight years ago, Ron Gilbert published a short post on Twitter, in which he declared that if he were to announce the next installment of the Monkey Island he would do it on April Fool's Day. As it turns out, he kept his promise.
At this point no details about the game are known. All we know is that works on the title have been in progress for two years now. We can only wait for more information from the creators.
It should be noted here that Ron Gilbert was responsible for the first two installments of the series - The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. So this will be the first part of the series in over 30 years from this developer. There are many indications that it will be treated as a "legitimate" third installment, ignoring the existence of The Curse of Monkey Island from 1997 and other games that were released later.
