Menzoberranzan is already the third - after Dungeon Hack and Ravenloft - game by DreamForge Entertainment, based on the famous paper RPG Advanced Dungeons & Dragons system. Seen as an unofficial continuation of Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession, based on the same graphical engine and identical gameplay mechanics.
The story of the game tells the story of two warriors who return to their homeland after fighting the forces of evil in Icewind Dale. In the meantime, the village where they stayed is being attacked by unknown perpetrators and several of its inhabitants are being taken hostage. Everything indicates that the perpetrator of the attack may be the Drizztes, who were helped by the bribed captain of the local guard. Wanting to help the local community, the characters follow the invaders and so they get straight to the dark underground city of Menzoberranzan.
As in the aforementioned Ravenloft, we are dealing with the first-player RPG, based on the principles of the second edition of the AD&D system. In the course of the game we control the team, consisting of four daredevils, representing the typical races and specialties of the system. Two of them are already known heroes - another two of them are recruited during the adventure in the same way as in the previous DreamForge Entertainment game. Fantasy literature enthusiasts recognize the characters known from R.A. novels among the characters that can be recruited. Salvatore. He too, together with E. Greenwood and D. Nilesem is the author of a 1992 triptych of fantasy called Menzoberranzan: The Famed City of the Drow, on which the plot of the game is based.
Menzoberranzan is characterized by freedom of movement in a three-dimensional environment and a real-time fight, during which we choose the appropriate attack options and click on the opponent, inflicting the selected type of blow. The mechanics of fun reminds a bit of such cult for the genre items as Ultima Underworld or Eye of the Beholder. The creators have made every effort to ensure high quality graphics and interludes as well as (in CD version) fully digitalized dialogues.
