Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession is a first-person role-playing game set in Ravenloft - the darkest and most dangerous of the worlds of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons universe. The game was produced by DreamForge Entertainment studio, with two warmly received RPG productions: The Summoning and Dungeon Hack.
In the game we play Lord Delft's subjects, who lost the sacred amulet of power as a result of an attack on his estate in Elturel. At his request, the player-controlled team chases the thief to recover an invaluable attribute from his hands. Unexpectedly, at the moment of killing the perpetrator and recovering the amulet, the team of daredevils is teleported to the dark, foggy land. It is Barovia - the oldest land of Ravenloft, ruled by the prince of vampires, known as Strahd von Barovich. Trapped in a mysterious land, the team sets off to the Prince's castle to face the undead and other vile creatures lurking in wait for the lives of the heroes.
Ravenloft's gameplay is strictly controlled by Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. The player-led team initially consists of two heroes, either created by themselves or selected from among ready-made characters. They represent the typical race system (man, elf, dwarf, etc.) and class (warrior, cleric, etc.). The next two heroes join the team in the further part of the game, selected from a wide range of recruitable characters. The game is shown in the first person perspective and allows you to move smoothly in a 3D environment with the help of cursor keys or mouse. The fight against enemies is realized by clicking the cursor on the opponent and is an original combination of turn-based system with real time competition.
The advantage of the game is characteristic for the world of Ravenloft dark climate, combining elements of dark fantasy and gothic horror. In terms of binding, the production offers full three-dimensional graphics, which on weaker machines can slow down the game significantly. The CD-ROM version has been additionally enriched with high quality digitalised dialogues. Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession is one of the first cRPG games to use a self-propelled system.
