Mechs & Mercs: Black Talons is a tactical strategy game, created by an independent developer Camel 101 and released on PC. The studio had previously made the RTS Gemini Wars and several casual games.

Plot

Mechs & Mercs: Black Talons is set in a science fiction universe, known from Gemini Wars. The title offers a single player campaign, in which you assume the role of a mercenary leader commanding his own army. Apart from pursuing his own agenda, the protagonist is eager to take on various tasks for conflicted factions. Aparts from money, fulfilling those contracts grants you respect with a particular faction as well as hostility of others. If you gain enough respect with a faction, you can get access to some unique units. On the other hand, constantly undermining someone’s position in the galactic arena can quickly make you enemies, who will attack your troops in a least expected moment.

Mechanics

The heart of your army is the star cruiser, which you can expand by adding new types of weapons and advanced technologies. Thus customized mothership lets you recruit more units, teleport your troops or perform destructive bombings. You can also modify individual squads. They come in five classes corresponding to their different roles: recon, engineers, assault, tactical units, and support. Each of them has its own progression tree and unique abilities and weapons. There are usually only several units available at your disposal, which stresses up gameplay’s tactical dimension. Because your soldiers gain experience in battle it is a good idea to take a good care of them. There are also powerful mechs on the battlefields, equipped with gear looted in combat or purchased for money.

Technical aspects

Battles in Mechs & Mercs: Black Talons are fought in diverse environments. Planets, on which the missions are set, are characterized by specific weather conditions that influence combat. Depending on the location, the weather varies much: from ordinary rain or snow to ion storms or even more dangerous conditions.
