Knee Deep Description
Knee Deep is an episodic noir adventure game. The game was developed for PCs by Prologue Games, a small dev studio based in North Carolina.
Plot
The action takes place in a small town called Cypress Knee, located in swamp region of Southern Florida. The story begins with an alleged suicide of a washed-out Hollywood actor, whose career had declined some time ago. The body of the actor was found hanging from a tower in Chief Roadside’s Wonderland, an amusement park ill-famed for its irreverent portrayal of Indian culture. Some of the evidence found contradicts the ruling “suicide” theory, so the case receives a closer look from three individuals – a local journalist, Jack Bellet, cynical private detective K.C. Gaddis, and female blogger Romana Teague. During the gameplay, we take control of all three characters, attempting to discover the real cause of the mysterious suicide.
Mechanics
Knee Deep is full of realistic characters, complicated intrigue, and a rich background in form of a drowsy, indigenous town. The authors decided upon an interesting way to tell the story – we are looking at something, which can be called an interactive play. All events take place on one scene, and each visited location is built from various mockups and scenario elements. This idea evolves even further; each building has a part of the wall removed so that the audience can see what is going on inside. When an actor reads a text message, a large screen appears behind his back, while a projector displays the contents of the note, while revelations are often enhanced by a scenic light put on the character in question.
However, when it comes to mechanics, Knee Deep is a classic adventure game. The players explore the locations, talk with encountered characters, and solve puzzles. The plot is the most important aspect, with many situations forcing a player decision as to the next course of the story. The game offers a classic, point-n-click interface, but the users are welcome to use a gamepad.
