Gem Smashers is a remake of an arcade logic game that had been released on Game Boy Advance consoles in 2003. The new edition has been released, among others, for Nintendo Switch, and was developed by Frame Studios.
Plot
Gem Smashers takes us to an alternative version of Earth inhabited by peaceful beings. Unfortunately, the planet falls prey to a mad scientist known as IMBU who not only has taken all the energy on the planet but also has imprisoned its inhabitants in colored crystals. Fortunately, three characters – Bau, Bam, and Bom, had managed to escape and now attempt to help their friends and get rid of their archenemy.
Mechanics
Gem Smashers is a typical example of a match-3 game. During the game, we assume control of one of three beings, bouncing him from the objects on the playing field and destroying colored crystals. It should be mentioned that to destroy a crystal of the given color, one has to assume the same color by falling upon certain objects found on the map. Moreover, the player has to avoid obstacles marked with a skull symbol. From time to time, we run into a boss encounter (the player has to hit the boss’ weak points in order to defeat them).
Game Modes
Gem Smashers features an extensive story mode in which we are left with over 100 levels located in 8 varied worlds. Aside from the above, we’ve received access to a tutorial, a multiplayer Battle Mode, and the ability to beat time records.
Technical Aspects
Gem Smashers offers decent visuals with cartoon design and rich colors.
