Strategic War in Europe
Gary Grigsby’s War in the West: Operation Torch is an add-on for the complex turn based strategy game – Gary Grigsby’s War in the West. The series, developed by 2by3 Games, focuses on events from World War II, and is known for being co-developed by Gary Grigsby, the founder of the company, and a veteran of the genre. The expansion doesn’t modify the mechanics of the game in any way, but introduces a set of new scenarios – real, as well as fictional ones.
Mechanics
Operation Torch offers 10 new scenarios, which take us to Tunisia, Germany, France (a famous “Operation Dragoon” that took place in August, 1944) and Italy (Operation Diadem, also known as the Fourth Battle of Monte Casino). The expansion also offers the ability to take part in two air battles (e.g. the attacks on the Germany’s fuel industry). However, the most interesting scenario seems to be the one describing a hypothetical course of the war, where Hitler was killed in March 1943, but the German forces are more powerful than they actually were at the time. It’s the biggest one of all scenarios – lasting the course of 109 turns; from June 1943, to August 1945. Each turn corresponds to a week in real time.
Technical Aspects
When it comes to the technical side, the expansion doesn’t introduce anything new. The game looks the same as the base game. War in the West is a title for real genre fanatics – the visuals are minimalistic and extremely utilitarian, while the gameplay itself is incredibly complex.
