Unity of Command II Description
Unity of Command II is the second installment in the series of WWII turn-based strategy games, started back in 2011. The production is the result of cooperation between the independent 2x2 Games studio and Croteam (authors of such games as Serious Sam and The Talos Principle).
Plot
Unity of Command II takes players to the western of World War II. In the course of the game, players take control of the Allied forcesto lead them to victory, taking part in a series of battles and operations that actually heppanened during this period. In addition, however, there is nothing to prevent the player from trying to change the course of history and, for example, march to Berlin, standing up against the Red Army or give up the Market Garden Operation to provide military assistance to General Patton.
Mechanics
In Unity of Command II the action is shown from the top-down perspective. The game follows the turn-based convention and takes place on a clear map. Unlike the first part of the series, the board is covered by the fog of war - in order to discover what is underneath it, it is necessary to carry out intelligence operations, capture enemy soldiers (which may also be encountered by player's subordinates) or expand the headquarters. The latter is another novelty introduced by the developers and allows players to take advantage of special abilities including resupplying in emergency situations, and sending trucks for re-deployment of soldiers.
As in Unity of Command, during the game players should not only move troops around the map and dispatch them to consecutive battles with enemy forces, but also take care of the supply lines. Despite the fact that their presence forces players to carefully plan the next steps (especially when it comes to activities carried out behind the enemy lines), it can also be used for one's own benefit, for example by destroying the enemy supply routes.
Game modes
Unity of Command II can be played solo or via the local multiplayer mode (following the "hot seat" convention). In addition to the campaign, individual scenarios are waiting to be tested; players can also create their own scenarios, as the game provids an extensive scenario editor.
Technical aspects
Unity of Command II is based on a new graphics engine, which allowed to prepare a three-dimensional visuals. However, the authors managed to maintain the style that made the 2D prototype so distinctive.
